The Experience

The river Autize flows at the end of the garden, its gentle murmur setting the tone for a peaceful holiday here. You can swim in a heated saltwater pool, then enjoy an outside solar-heated shower, spa and tree-shaded sofa. The thick stone walls and ceramic tiles of this 18th-century farmhouse keep it cool in summer. In winter, you can cosy up by the fire in a lounge hung with pretty paintings.

All is natural and green, from sand-and-chalk walls to reclaimed elm in the custom-made kitchen. Lovely to cook here, then dine under a soaring, sloping ceiling or out on a silvery deck complete with electric grill. Beautifully restored furniture and bright fabrics complement the neutral colour schemes of each bedroom. Two are upstairs, with green views and shutters. One twin is downstairs, with an open shower and old bread oven in the bathroom.

It’s an easy cycle on borrowed bikes to Coulonges-sur-l’Autize for a market and shops.

Reviews

A sweet, friendly, sunny place owned by a kind retired couple who live next door but who leave their guests in peace unless they are needed. The pool and its wooden deck, just out of the sitting room doors would be a heavenly spot for a sundowner, with views out across the valley to the river below.

This gîte is so aptly named. It is beautiful internally and externally and is surrounded by the most stunning scenery. Everything that you could wish for to ensure a wonderful holiday is provided. The pool and hot tub are superb, and we had great fun using the electric bikes to discover the region. We would highly recommend this gite and would love to return to it. Well done to our very welcoming hosts.

Rod, Saffron Walden

We spent two relaxing weeks here with our friends Sarah and Mick. Arriving in hot sunshine we were greeted by Philippe and Christiane who showed us around this spacious and immaculate light and airy house with its inviting pool and pleasant outlook over fields with the river beyond. Our hosts were charming and Philippe's local knowledge was invaluable. We enjoyed many meals on the verandah watching the wildlife and keeping the two donkeys well supplied with carrots. We loved the locality and particularly Coulon and Danvix and made use of the electric bikes. Looking forward to visiting again.

This is a beautiful property, very comfortable and easy to use. The pool is lovely and has a wonderful view over farmland. It is very private too. Supermarkets are nearby as are the boulangers, but there are not many local restaurants which was a shame for us. All in all, we had a great week at Le Petit Paradis.

Lorraine

This property was in the most beautiful setting. The back of the house looks out over open fields down to the river. The owners were so welcoming when we arrived and gave us lots of information about the area and things to do. The property itself was immaculate and the beds were so comfortable which made a welcome change from some gites we have visited. The outside area is spacious and we enjoyed relaxing in the seating area using the wifi with a glass of wine. The pool was warm and all the outdoor furniture was good quality. We also managed to use the electric bikes which were fun.

Location

The neighbourhood

The countryside is deep and the river Autize curves through it. It's a lovely valley for walkers with paths along the river as well as many bridleways zig-zagging through the fields in every direction. Hire bikes (including electric ones) to go a bit further. La Rochelle and Île de Ré are an hour away for shopping, sightseeing and superb beaches. Explore the magical ruined Maillezais Abbey.
