The Experience

Comfort abounds: much space, clean lines, a picture-postcard view of the château, a huge dining room for special meals, even a quiet space on the landing for those who need to work. Lighting is thoughtful and the contemporary feel offset by antique touches. Bedrooms are immaculate (one on the ground floor and three upstairs) and all have sleek bathrooms with generously-sized showers.

Even the fussiest of cooks will delight in the kitchen – sharp knives, oodles of gadgets, beautiful crockery and glassware. You’re left a pretty basket with some treats and there’s an honesty fridge to raid. Grocery shopping can be ordered in advance, as can extra cleaning, bike hire, massages, or a private chef.

Sunny days will be spent outdoors: the gorgeous pool is a joy and there’s an enormous outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven and large gas barbecue. Sit back and unwind, or set off on gentle strolls and cycles through this bucolic landscape.

Reviews

I fell in love with the beauty of this place and it's charming owners, Jim and Darryl, who feel like old friends. Whilst the Pavillon de Chasse is about as luxurious as they come, it feels easy and laid back here. If you have the opportunity to look inside the chateau chapel, do, it is so beautiful. It feels a real privilege to be here and to take it all in - it's a fabulously special place.

Location

The neighbourhood

Find classic open French countryside, peppered with pretty market towns - all celebrated for their dairy production, including the famous Pamplie butter. Pick up cheeses and local wines for picnics. It's a 10-minute drive to Champdeniers, for shops and restaurants. Les Terrasses du Lac, an exceptional restaurant, is 12 minutes by car.

Local points of interest from Darryl & Jim

  • The area features many historic châteaux, including Château d'Oiron (Renaissance + contemporary art), Saint Mesmin (medieval reenactments), Javarzay (gardens + museum), and Bressuire (extensive medieval ruins), showcasing the region's rich heritage.
  • Outdoor options range from high-adrenaline activities like caving, ziplining, wakeboarding, and tree climbing to relaxed pursuits such as golf, hiking, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking-all within 30 minutes.
  • Family attractions include Zoodyssée (European wildlife), Mouton Village (sheep encounters), and Natur'Zoo (300+ animals). For thrills: Parc de la Vallée (rides), Futuroscope (3D/interactive), and Puy du Fou (spectacular live shows).
  • On Friday nights, head down to the Café des Belles Fleurs pub in Fenioux (10 minutes away) for a great evening of live music. The place fills up quickly so be sure to book ahead.
  • One of our favourite places for lunch is La Petite Noisette run by a lovely English couple in Vernoux-en-Gâtine (20 minutes away). Very popular so book ahead to avoid disappointment.
  • Sometimes all you want to do is sit in the hot tub, with a drink in hand, and look up at night at the clear sky and be amazed at all the stars you can see.
