The Experience
Lavender fields are the backdrop to this Provençal mas; cicadas and birdsong the soundtrack. A fortified medieval farm, its high stone walls and rocky bluff now enclose the owners’ house and three eco-friendly gîtes that gaze south and west to the village. Bastide and Fenière are the family cottages, with large living areas, geothermal heating and corner kitchens. Bastide has wicker chairs, shelves sunk into chunky stone walls, a vine-shaded terrace; Fenière, up in the hayloft, has sweeping views and a cast-iron table under a chestnut. Simple bedrooms have floaty curtains, Provençal paintings, plain furniture; a touch of luxury in king-size beds and shiny bathrooms (only one in Bastide). For couples there’s L’Etable, a rustic studio whose mint-green doors frame views of terrace, gardens and deep (but fenced) natural pool. Also: a solar shower, hammock and electric barbecue for grilling sausages from the village market. Beyond, a sleepy stream with a hump-backed ‘Roman’ bridge, a new cycle path, farms, fêtes and inspiration for painters and poets in Luberon natural park – gentle Alain and Françoise will advise.

La Baou provided a peaceful, relaxing place for us to enjoy. Our charming hosts Francoise and Alain could not have done more to make this a memorable holiday. The wonderful natural pool was delightful as was the cool Gite during hot weather. How nice to be back in rural France..

We LOVED Le Mas de La Baou and hope to come back there. We especially liked the combination of an enormous garden and well-kept private property within a stone-throw distance of a very cute and functioning village of Cereste. You have privacy but are not isolated: Delicious bakery, ice cream and supermarket within reach. The property is well-thought out and well-designed and has everything you may need (OK, the kitchen crockery may need a little update). Our children were delighted by the natural pool and the happy frogs sitting around it. We were sad to leave when the holiday was over.

We had a wonderfully, peaceful stay at Le Mas de la Baou. It is in a terrific location and Françoise and Alain were so helpful. The natural pool is beautiful. A very pleasant stroll to the village boulangerie or the local supermarket. Nearby is the larger town of Apt which has a great market. East or west are stunning villages to visit. Highly recommend!

We had a great week at Le Mas de la Baou. The cottage for two people was small but very comfortable, clean and tastefully decorated. The Céreste surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful and finally, the loving hospitality and helpfulness of the owners Françoise and Alain have contributed to the fact that we would love to come back again. They are wonderfully nice people with beautiful stories.

Local points of interest from Alain et Françoise Alter
- Think that Provence, especially Luberon, no longer needs to be described? We bet we can make you discover a more authentic and unknown Provence. Beautiful sceneries, quiet old villages (sometimes in ruins), amazing "bories", Roman and Gallic vestiges...
- Do you like walking through the thousand scents of the Mediterranean scrubland? You won't have time, in a week or even two, to enjoy all the trails we will advise you to walk. You'll want to come back!
- Swimming in our natural pool surrounded by flowers, is a rare treat. You will feel the true purity of water without chemicals, and you will see the small animals that live in plants: frogs, tadpoles, dragonflies ... Your kids will love it for sure!
- There are European beavers dams on the creek near our home.
- The discovery of ocher mines and superb trails between orange cliffs will be a highlight of your stay.

We loved the peaceful location of L’Etable overlooking the lavender field and the old town of Céreste. Our accommodation had all we needed, it was compact but comfortable and as the weather was very hot, we sat outside under the tree for all our meals. We visited pretty local towns and markets always looking forward to returning to swim in the natural pool whilst watching the dragonflies, butterflies and sunbathing frogs. Highly recommended
