The Experience

A dramatic drive along winding roads, past fields of gentle cows and hardy sheep, leads to a quiet mountain village and Christine’s 200-year-old house. What strikes you first are the panoramic views of rugged peaks, stunning year-round, whether blanketed in snow or carpeted in wildflowers.

Five bedrooms with balconies fan out across the house and offer a welcome retreat after high-octane outdoor activities. Calm and uncluttered, with soft lighting, smart bathrooms and your host’s elegant framed photographs, each has a lounge space for reading and relaxing.

Breakfast is locally sourced, homemade and topped up with seasonal garden goodness, served on the terrace in summer and in the atmospheric hall in winter. A ski bus transports you to the slopes; you can hike and bike from the door, or take to the water at Lake Serre-Ponçon. Walk to the village restaurant or stay put for one of Christine’s suppers — she’s a superb cook.

Location

The neighbourhood

The village is small but thriving with a popular restaurant, a small museum and plenty of communal activities on offer year-round, all within walking distance. It's a 15-minute drive to a larger town for shops and other restaurants. The mountains are the real draw plus water sports and swimming on Lake Serre-Ponçon, or white water rafting on the Guil and the Durance rivers.

Local points of interest from Christine

  • Varied hikes for all levels in the wild and unspoiled mountains of the Hautes Alpes, as well as climbing, via ferrata and even mountaineering in the nearby Écrins National Park.
  • Les Orres, where Maison Cimes is located, is an authentic mountain village situated at 1450 meters: a place full of serenity to recharge and discover pastoral life.
  • From the house, terraces, balconies and garden, the panoramic view over the valley is incredible.
  • In summer, Lake Serre Ponçon, the largest in France, offers numerous water sports activities: swimming, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing... And its tributaries are well-known spots for rafting or canyoning.
  • In winter, the Orres ski resort is accessible by free shuttle from the house in 10 minutes. Nearby, there are also opportunities for wonderful snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ski touring.
  • The region is also rich in historical and cultural sites: Boscodon Abbey, the old town of Embrun and its cathedral, and the small fortified town of Mont Dauphin. Summer also offers numerous and varied festivals.
