The Experience

The well-travelled owners have filled this friendly house with much to catch the eye, so the feel is homely and you should settle in quickly. Lots of books (mainly in French), games and a smart TV mean even chilly days will be happy. Mostly you’ll be outdoors, admiring the fruit trees, finding a shady spot for a snooze in the garden, or cooling off in the gorgeous pool.

The kitchen, traditional farmhouse style, has all the kit you need to rustle up meals, and room for everyone to cook together – eat indoors or out, and you’ll find an electric plancha for barbecues, along with a couple of bottles of good local wine. Lovely to sit out and admire the views – it’s quiet here, but not remote.

Bedrooms (the main with its own terrace, two en suite, two sharing a shower) have lovely garden views. Three are air conditioned, the fourth sits on the garden side so remains naturally cool. A super holiday spot.

Reviews

This is a fascinating house. It's very genuine and full of history, such as the Roman lintel above the front door and of course the Roman vestiges in the parkland. There is also so much to do and to see in the immediate area, all of historic interest. This house gives you a glimpse into a distant past.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are woods to the side of the house where you can take long walks. The shops and restaurants are about 2.5km away in Tourrettes and Fayence, which has a wonderful market three days a week in summer, less frequently in winter. A must visit is Europe's grand canyon, Les Gorges du Verdon, less than an hour away. There is a lake 10km away for water sports, and also restaurants.

Local points of interest from Jean

  • La Bergerie is on the GR49, with walking routes beginning right from the house. Explore the Tourrettes state forest along the Chemins des Acates, Pichot, Pibresson and Lac. Around Mons and Callian, lovely walks follow the Siagne river.
  • Discover the perched medieval villages of Tourrettes, Fayence, Callian, Seillans and Mons. Fayence is known for its clock tower. About 25km away, Grasse is home to the Fragonard, Molinard and Galimard perfume houses.
  • Visit Cannes and the Lérins Islands, Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat. Boats depart from the Old Port; the crossing takes around 20 minutes. For a day by the sea, Théoule-sur-Mer has beautiful beaches.
  • The Gorges du Verdon and Lake Sainte-Croix make a spectacular outing. Reach Saint-Tropez by boat from Sainte-Maxime to avoid road traffic. On the coast, visit Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and Villa Kérylos.
  • The Pays de Fayence offers golf, tennis and padel. Lake Saint-Cassien is ideal for sailing, pedal boats, canoeing, kayaking and rowing. Golfers can enjoy the renowned Terre Blanche Golf in Tourrettes.
  • The nine villages of the Pays de Fayence host a lively programme of musical events, including Musique Cordiale, the jazz festival at the foot of Tourrettes Castle, string quartets and cello recitals.
