The Experience

In a village near fabulous Fontainebleau sits this comfortable cottage behind a high stone wall and in acres of grounds. Light pours in to a good-sized sitting room with inviting sofa and chairs for a quiet read, and wide doors lead to the terrace for al fresco dining or sunbathing with green views. You’ll find a walled garden, a lawn for sprawling or playing games, a ping pong table and a barbecue for merry summer evenings.

The kitchen is large, just the ticket for rustling up meals and plenty of space for four to cook together. You’re left plenty of kit and a bottle of the owners’ branded olive oil. If you choose to eat indoors there’s a lovely wooden table for sociable holiday meals. Two bedrooms are spruce and fresh with well-dressed beds, crisp linens, attractive fabrics and calming views – you should sleep peacefully.

Walk and cycle from the house, have days out visiting villages and markets, ride horses through the nearby forest, take a tour of Jean Cocteau’s gaff.

Reviews

Domaine de la Marcotte feels like the ideal place for a restful break. Enjoy the garden, try the local hikes, or hop in the car to go on a culture trip to Barbizon or the nearby châteaux. Inside the Cottage you will find comfort and personality which will make you feel at home. Another Pierres d'Histoire renovation success. Enjoy!

Location

The neighbourhood

The cottage is in a quiet village, Saint-Martin-en-Bière, but you're less than an hour from Paris. Within a 15-minute drive are some of the greatest French châteaux – Courances, Dampierre, Fontainebleau – as well as the cobbled painters' village of Barbizon, the school of landscape made famous by Millais, Corot and Rousseau. There are pretty hikes along the Vallée de l'École.

Local points of interest from Pierres d’Histoire

  • Château de Fontainebleau - visit one of the most iconic châteaux of French history and discover the royal apartments of kings and emperors who lived there.
  • Wander in the charming village of Barbizon, the school of landscape, made famous by the masters of the impressionist movement.
  • Enjoy wonderful walks in Fontainebleau Forest and discover the Gorges de Franchard, amazing rocks in the heart of the forest.

Introducing

Pierres d’Histoire

It was while staying in the wilds of Scotland at a beautifully restored Landmark Trust house that the seed of the idea for Pierres d’Histoire was sown for its founder, Dominique Imbert. Passionate about the preservation of ancient heritage, he restores or re-builds abandoned historical houses in France, not only breathing new life into them but making them comfortable holiday homes.
