The Experience

Enter the carved door to find big chunky beams and slab floors of slate, worn smooth from centuries of use. The steeply pitched 18th-century Mas de la Coutettaz, the oldest building in Morzine, lies at the quiet end of town, a five-minute stroll from shops, restaurants and lifts to the vast Portes du Soleil.

Set off in summer for alpine paths (avoiding cyclists hurtling down mountains!). Traverse the snowy slopes of Morzine, Les Gets, Châtel and Avoriaz. Return to hot toddies in the old flagged bar, and log fires lit at the merest hint of chill. Dinners in the former cattle shed are candlelit and huge fun. The food is delicious and the wines well chosen.

Big, quirky, characterful bedrooms wait at the top of the stone stair. Some overlook the garden and others the mountain. Splash out on the one with the adorable balcony.

Reviews

Stephen, Newark

What a great place. Very kind hosts. Nothing is too much and all the staff are very friendly and professional. Could not recommend the Farmhouse enough. The food is out of this world and can cater for all needs. I enjoyed the stay so much I have already booked again.

Rajiv

A special place in the heart of the French Alps. We were a large group of 10 and were accommodated in 3 lovely rooms. The beds were especially comfortable after a long day's driving and the staff were all exceptionally helpful. We will definitely be back!

Jo

Fantastic rooms with very comfortable beds and endless hot water. Food was, generally, very good. Excellent breakfasts to set you up for a days skiing. Tea and cakes to welcome you back in the afternoon. A wonderful dinner in great company around a long polished table. Very special. Dorian and James are skilled in recruiting the best staff. Friendly and helpful and fun. I can be critical having been in the business but there is nothing to criticise at The Farmhouse and I would definitely recommend it for an extra special ski holiday.

Location

The neighbourhood

Hotel Coutettaz sits at the foot of the Col de Joux Plane, in its own grassy garden and with chalets around. Your nearest lifts are Le Pleney, 600m, and Super Morzine, 1km; in winter, the hotel ferries skiers to both. In summer you have hiking, biking and paragliding, tennis courts and a 50m pool. Smaller, family-friendly Les Gets is a 12-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Dorrien Ricardo

  • Mountain biking and Road biking are the major sports in Morzine and the surrounding areas in the summer months. The Tour de France last visited in 2010 and July 2016.
  • The Morzine leisure centre is just down the road from us. This is an Olympic size swimming pool, giant 80 metre water slide, bouncy castle, beach volley ball, indoor pool and spa with saunas and Turkish baths.
  • Fantasticable: This is the only zip wire of its kind in the Alps. Two 1,200 metres cables which shoot you across the Plaine Dranse valley and back again. At one point you are 240 metres from the valley floor! A must for any adrenaline junkie!
  • The beautiful lake Montriond is well worth visiting. Whether it be to walk around it, swim in it, paddle through it or just soak up the sunshine.
  • Mountain walks and hiking are very popular with stunning views to be had at every twist and turn. Day trips can start from The Farmhouse doorstep and there are different grades of difficultly for all walkers.
  • The Portes du Soleil region is one of the biggest and best in the world for skiing. 650km of pistes, 13 interconnecting resorts and fantastic off piste back country – you have everything at your fingertips.

Introducing

Dorrien Ricardo

Dorrien moved to France in 1982, and fell in love with Morzine in 1990. On discovering that this beautiful dilapidated farmhouse was up for sale, he succeeded in buying it three years later. Manager James arrived in 2008, leaving the world of finance behind. Together with Di, Dorrien's wife, they're warm natural hosts who know how to make guests feel at home.
