The Experience

Find peace on the edge of Carelles: one shop, and a baker that delivers daily. Your ivy-strewn cottage, resurrected from a barn, sits opposite the owners’ house on the other side of the lane surrounded by orchards and pastures. The owner, ex pat from Switzerland, friendly, down-to-earth and happily in France, moved in search of air and space, and usher you in. There’s a comfy sofa and a fireplace neatly repointed with a wood-burner; free WiFi, logs on the house, and a TV with satellite channels; the kitchen fits snugly into its corner; the French windows open to the garden; and the bedroom sports a deep mattress, a brass bed and a luxurious roll top tub with many splendored bubbles! All is warm, comfy and cosy, all is on one floor so you don’t need to be sprightly. On summery days, you have your own lovely, secluded, south-facing garden, with views, and a barbecue, and a gate in the picket fence opening into the orchard so you can laze in the hammock that’s strung from the trees. Borrow the bikes, book a horse, stroll to the local bar, visit medieval Fougères. Or spend the day on the Emerald Coast.

Reviews

Helen, Skipton

I would highly recommend this gite. It is absolutely charming and has earned its recommendation by Alistair Sawday. We have just enjoyed a fantastic two week stay here and had a brilliant holiday. It's location is perfect for those wanting to get away from it all; and yet there are so many interesting things to see in the locality. The gite is really well equipped but has those special attributes I would expect from an Alistair Sawday recommended property. I would definitely recommend it and this beautiful part of France. Very friendly and helpful owners on hand if you need them.

Simon

Delightful secluded cottage and garden surrounded by farmland with everything you need on hand. The welcome pack supplied by Ceri was very comprehensive and the rhubarb crumbles a nice touch. She and Pete did everything possible to give us a relaxing and memorable holiday and even gave us a tour of the house and numerous barns. An ideal location to visit the wonderful Le Jardin de la Pellerine on the way to Fougeres.

Melissa

One of the nicest self catering properties I've stayed in. We, and our dog, were made to feel very welcome. The gite is incredibly well equipped and each room has had care and attention lavished on it in terms of design and function. The whole place felt luxurious and homely and we really appreciated the welcome pack left by Ceri. The gite and its garden were very private and peaceful and I'd definitely recommend to other dog owners.

Jill

Lovely gite looking onto a delightful garden which is a real sun trap. Very generous welcome pack with a really well thought out selection of goodies. Ceri and Pete the owners are a delightful couple who go a long way to ensure your stay is everything it should be.

Local points of interest from Peter Morlidge

  • You're a quick cycle ride away from Les Jardins des Renaudies. Open from April to November, in addition to the gardens you can enjoy the honey fair, the maize maze and the pumpkin festival.
  • Fougères is rightly famous for its castle and the gardens, but you can also enjoy a day at the Forêt de Fougères and take a dip in the swimming lake. Perfect for cooling down in the height of summer.
  • The Fête de Carelles normally takes place on the first Sunday of July. There are floats, marching bands and refreshments until late into the evening.
  • The gite garden is south facing and very sheltered, so it is often warmer there than anywhere else. This allows for extended sunbathing and late al fresco dining.
