The Experience

In Gorizia, through an archway off a beautiful piazza, you pull up into a courtyard of luscious lawns and elegant palms. This 14th-century palazzo may have grand proportions, but the immediate feel is of an affectionately tended home. The amiable Contessa guides you past chandeliers and fresh flowers, broad stone staircases and miles of herringbone parquet to two light-filled bedrooms, each intended to delight. Wooden floors creak charmingly, sunlight floods in through soft white curtains, and bathrooms ooze thick fluffy towels and indulgent luxury: just bliss. ‘La dolce vita’ surrounds you here, with vineyards and good restaurants to visit, country walks to build up your appetite and operas and Roman history to quench cultural thirst. Do explore the palazzo’s Persian-style garden and ask the Contessa for a guided tour of the hand-drawn frescoes, the modern art and the memorabilia. Elegant, atmospheric Lantieri: Napoleon, Schiller and Casanova all stayed here – and wrote about it; but as you rest in the garden listening to birdsong, you will think yourself the only one to have discovered this Italian jewel.

We have never been let down by Sawdays and this proved the case again. What the palazzo lacks in modernity it blows one away with history but more importantly with warmth and service. Carolina is as attentive and engaged a hostess as you could find and Diana, her daughter runs the day to day operation really efficiently and with equal warmth. You sleep well and breakfast is simple but fresh and delicious. No TV but good WiFi and anyway one is happy to sit and read after exploring the region and the city. Make sure to stay for a few nights, avail of the recommendations and leave refreshed.

On our tour of Friuli we stopped at Palazzo Lantieri. We were personally welcomed by the hostess and her open and warm nature made us feel that we had known her for a long time. You enter the premises and feel like you're travelling through time, into the past. The view into the garden completes the ambience. The breakfast table was very lovingly and stylishly set. With freshly harvested fruit from the garden, as well as delicious home-made jams and the best croissants and coffee. We were happy to accept the offer to have a tour of the historic Palazzo and Park after breakfast. The stay was for us a highlight of our trip which we will remember for a long time and we absolutely want to repeat.

Great experience. History all around, attentive hosts, breakfast like you have never had before, pretty town, gateway to the Collio Goriziano wine production area of Friulia and Slovenia. Nice ristorante. Convenient for walking or cycling. Accommodation amazing for history, presentation and comfort.

Palazzo Lantieri is the best and most beautiful accommodation in Friuli. This is mainly due to the charming Contessa Carolina who made each of our visits so special. Thank you very much!

Descrete building from outside - surprising historical and familiar world inside the walls. Perfect location with several restaurants and bars around. Styling and hospitality were to our best attention - even with own breakfast room with homemade jam and view to the garden, were Carolina grows own vegetables and fruits. Lovely interieur details - mixed with modern art all over. As also the city is very interesting in many aspects we absolutely recommend a minimum of a 2 days stay.
