The Experience

Once a simple, sturdy farm – animals at ground level, humans above – now beautifully transformed by London-based designers Fran and Paul. They’ve restored the wide external stone stair, the ancient beams and exposed brickwork, and kept a pillar smoothed by generations of passing beasts. Their understated styling with calm colour schemes and pared-back furnishing, sits easily with the old bones of the building. Add plenty of good books and art, modern lighting, deeply comfortable bedrooms with gentle country views, a well-equipped kitchen with cement worktops, smart bathrooms and a big sofa by the upstairs wood-burning stove and you’ve surely all you need indoors. And it’s lovely outdoors too: a long wooden pergola laden with wisteria shades the sunny side of the house; you eat at wrought iron tables on pale flagstones and have acres of mature olive and fruit trees to roam. Having created this relaxing home, the owners are keen to share it with like-minded folk who’ll love walking in the Sibillini national park, visiting local castles and markets (like Fermo’s summer brocante market), and the Adriatic coast.

Reviews

Agata, London

Our stay in the house was a perfect escape from a city life. The place is spacious and tastefully decorated and offeres a lovely peace and quiet we were looking for. Having my morning coffee out in the garden and enjoying the delightful and calming beauty of surroundings was my favourite experience of all. Hiking in the Sibillini mountains was part of our daily routine too, and with so many new places to go and new trails to challenge we could never get bored of it! Not to mention indulging in the divine Italian cuisine after that! It all only make us want to go back there again.

Zita, Maidenhead

This is the most beautiful farmhouse! The views outside are amazing and the interior is lovely. Simple but stunning - the owners have kept all the original features of the farmhouse with its terracotta tiles wooden beams, and archways but combined it with subtle modern design. We found it a gorgeous place to stay and very peaceful. Hoping to go back and paint there one day. Also the ancient hill town they are part of is delightful with a full scale re -enactment of its Renaissance past which we were lucky enough to catch.

Nadia, London

This wonderful house , beautifully restored, surrounded by a stunning garden with a view of hills of the Marche countryside, has all you need to feel comfortable, peaceful and charmed. This is a rental property like no other we stayed at. It is a home , tastefully decorated and elegant. The bedrooms are cozy, bathrooms modern and kitchen very well equipped. The house is located about 5 minutes to the nearest village and 40 minutes drive to the coastal town of Porto St Giorgio. We loved this place and will definitely go back.

  • Casa Toto is not a 'made for rental' property, it is our home, a place full of our lives, objects, art and memories, but you can now rent it through Alastair Sawday’s Special Places to Stay...
  • The house is beautifully designed for the simple pleasures of relaxing, reading, cooking and sharing slow food and wine. Casa Toto is not suitable for young children.
  • It is available between April and October, please send us an email with your holiday plans and to confirm availability.
  • Spend a day in the warm waters of the Adriatic Sea and sandy beach at Porto San Giorgio. Enjoy a delicious freshly caught fish lunch in one of the many beachside restaurants.
  • Spend a day in Loreto, the Basilica there houses the Virgin Mary’s private personal Chapel that was brought back by the Crusaders. It was later surrounded with marble and later still, a centre of pilgrimage built around it. The history is tangible.
  • Spend a day in Urbisaglia with its colossal medieval fort and well preserved Roman Amphitheatre. Or a day in the beautiful Sibillini Mountains and Piano-Grande, a place of tranquillity, wild flowers, take a picnic or enjoy the famous lentils and truffles.
