The Experience

It’s self-catering but you’re beautifully looked after: the housekeepers live in the grounds; they’ll pick you up from the airport or train station and give you a delicious breakfast each morning of freshly baked bread, jams, juices and fruit. You can also request a gourmet picnic, or lunch and dinner by arrangement. If you prefer to cook yourselves the kitchens are small, modern and practical with all the gear you need and a bottle of bubbly.

Both villas have magnificent drawing rooms with views over the water, outdoor spaces for wonderful al fresco meals, formal gardens filled with giant bamboo and Japanese maple; find a waterfall, a wisteria tunnel and a boat you can use to cross the lake. There’s a Finnish wood sauna and heated rock pools with jacuzzi.

The vintage Land Rover can whisk you to Lake Maggiore in five minutes, or there’s an elegant motor boat which you can take out yourself or ask for a guide. You’re a short walk from the village.

Reviews

One of the most incredible places I have ever been. Enchanting garden and quality out of the ordinary nowadays. Fantastic, knowledgeable and attentive staff.

Edoardo, Milan

fantastic stay! I had a great time in the Villa Ottagonale, a beautiful house furnished in neoclassical style but with all modern comforts and technologies. The lake is wonderful, inhabited by migratory birds and all kinds of plants and flowers. The staff is extremely kind and helpful. Delicious dinner by the lake, immersed in a magical atmosphere. Thank you for these special days.

Valentina, Milan

Outstanding in every respect! An unforgettable experience. A magical place out of time. Impeccable service and a villa with every comfort. I discovered that you can also organise events and birthdays. I really can't wait to come back this spring/summer! Thank you for everything.

Matteo, Milan

La Foleia is truly an enchanted place. I would never have expected to find in the middle of the woods two villas reflected on a frozen lake, a place of pure magic. All this seasoned with impeccable service, made of elegance and refinement.

Jacopo, Milano

I had the great fortune to be a guest at La Foleia, a residence refined in every detail. Two magical pavilions, untamed guardians of a lake of water lilies and lotus flowers in which they are reflected. At the disposal of La Foleia's guests is a timeless wooden boat to cross the enchanted lake, a charming motorboat anchored at nearby Lake Maggiore on which the wonderful and indefatigable hosts, Niccolò and Gemma, take the lucky guests on extraordinary excursions with irresistible picnics. What about the two magical pavilions? Exquisite furnishings, charming bathrooms with the finest linen...

La Foleia. The name and destination for a terrestrial paradise. This is the best location I have stayed at, a unique place that words cannot sum it up. A breathtaking private lake and a botanical garden immerse two beautiful neo-classical villas that face each other. Everything is curated to the last detail, making you feel like a king. The hosts, Niccoló and Gemma, made sure that me and my friends weren’t missing anything. I cannot wait to come back and stay at La Foleia in the spring, when the garden will be in its fullest of blooms and when the SPA area will be finalised. Thank you for hosting.

What can you say about this magical place!?! Look at the photos and really expect a paradise in Italy. A wonderful atmosphere by the pond of water lilies and lotus flowers, for those who want to get away from it all and live on inspiration for a few days. We really unplugged, the only trip we took was to visit an Orange Flag village on Lake Orta. We stayed in the octagonal house, the big windows let in lots of light and all we could hear was the hum of dragonflies flying over the lake! Everything was perfect, especially as we wanted to isolate ourselves completely and spend a few days relaxing

Eleonora, Milan

The two neoclassical villas and the stunning lake that separates them are straight out of a fairy tale: a magical place. There's plenty to do in the area but you wouldn't want to leave the beauty and tranquillity of the place, and the gourmet meals prepared just for you. Lake Maggiore is so close, only a 5-minute drive!

Location

The neighbourhood

Tempting to stay by your lovely villa but in the tiny village you'll find a pizzeria, a bar and a bakery. A 15-minute drive will take you to La Trattoria dei Commercianti which the family recommend. Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta are both a short drive. Mountain lovers can explore the Valsesia alpine valley and a UNESCO World heritage site at Alagna. Wine lovers will visit Gattinara, a 30-min drive; the train to Milan takes just an hour.

Local points of interest from Gemma Richards

  • Lake Maggiore is just a 5-10 minute drive from us! Go visit the wonderful towns of Arona, Stresa and Baveno.
  • The Borromeo islands, protected by UNESCO, are of breathtaking beauty. Take a ferry or our private boat to visit Isola Bella's gardens and have lunch on Isola dei Pescatori (the fisherman's island).
  • Orta San Giulio and it's fascinating lake are a 25 minute drive from us. Have a stroll through the old town and end with a lake-view aperitivo.
  • If you're feeling more adventurous, head to Val Sesia, an alpine valley that leads to Alagna at the feet of Monte Rosa, Europe's second highest mountain.
  • Gattinara, Ghemme, Sizzano, Fara are all wine-making towns, just 20 minutes form us!

Introducing

Gemma Richards

Gemma and Niccolò are the owners, who bought the place in 2018, have renovated it and just opened it to the public. They are passionate about hospitality and are now working on a boutique hotel in Milan. You are welcomed by the housekeepers who can organise all sorts of things for you during your stay. Treatments, massage, tasting menus, the Land Rover and the boat for lake trips - just ask.
