The Experience

Come to wrench yourselves away from being busy, or stressed, or simply overworked. Year round, this is a glorious spot for rest and recuperation in the most heavenly surroundings. Swing gently in a hammock, find some cool shade under the mature olives for a quiet read, slide gently into the pool when you get too hot and know that the only decision you have to make is whether or not you can be bothered to get up and prepare some lunch.

The kitchen is large (with a grand big window) and well kitted-out and you can eat outdoors in the shade or sunshine – gorgeous to admire the views and breathe in the freshest air. There are two double bedrooms (one inside the original trullo) and they share a bathroom, so this is best for families or friends who know each other well.

In winter it’ll be just as pleasing, with a fire roaring in the huge stone fireplace and a comfortable corner sofa – beaches will be empty, the walking is sublime.

As soon as you drive along the country road leading to the trullo, you get the feeling that something special is hidden at the end of it. Surrounded by nature, the location creates an incredible sense of peace and tranquillity. You immediately feel that staying here will be a chance to slow down, and reconnect with nature.

Location

The neighbourhood

Campomarino's sandy beach, with clear water for swimming, is a minute by car. It's a five-minute drive into medieval Maruggio for some fine architecture, narrow winding streets and the 15th-century church. There are plenty of good places to eat, including Pasticceria Delicieux for warm, fresh pastries and good coffee, Osteria del Vico for traditional food and daily specials.

Local points of interest from Valerio Magliola

  • Punta Prosciutto – Porto Cesareo, near Torre Lapillo, 20 mins. The finest stretch of coast nearby; white sand, shallow turquoise water, protected dunes. Arrive early in summer.
  • Duna di Campomarino – 41 hectares of protected dunes, an EU Natura 2000 site. Wild dunes, Mediterranean scrub. Walk the boardwalks at dawn.
  • Spiaggia d'Ayala – Campomarino, wild beach. Unspoiled, no facilities, no noise.oise.
  • Salina dei Monaci – Torre Colimena, 10 mins. Former saltworks, now a protected wetland with resident flamingos.
  • Ristorante Pizzeria Corallo – Fish, meat and pizza from the oven, classic or gourmet. Simple and unpretentious, a few steps from the sea. Cantine Felline – If you visit only one wine estate in Manduria, make it this one.
  • Masseria del Sale – A restored masseria among dry-stone walls and old olive trees, once a stop for the carts carrying salt from the Salina dei Monaci. Local ingredients, genuine atmosphere.
