The Experience
Deep in the Tiber valley, this organic farm dates back to the 1700s, with exposed stone walls, terracotta floors and chunky beams. There are plenty of communal areas indoors to relax, plan trips, work or simply drink a coffee. Mostly you’ll be out in the gardens, swimming in the sparkling pool, toning in the small gym, practising your yoga, steaming in the Finnish sauna or heading to the river and a natural waterfall.
The day starts with a delicious breakfast: fruits from the gardens, freshly baked breads, pastries, tarts, homemade jams, yogurts, local cheeses, meats and eggs. Light lunches can be prepared with a bit of notice and dinner is served from Wednesday to Saturday – a seasonal menu of regional delights, lovingly cooked by Adria.
You’ll sleep undisturbed in one of eight view-filled suites/apartments, hugely comfortable and with sparkling shower rooms, to a soundtrack of birdsong and trickling water. An Italian Garden of Eden.

Location
The neighbourhood
The nearest restaurant, Il Rifugio, is a five-minute drive in a town called Lama – also there's a minimarket, café and deli. A ten-minute drive will take you to Caprese Michelangelo for much more. This is a great base for exploring the Tiber valley, rich in medieval villages and spirituality. It's a half-hour drive to Anghiari, Sansepolcro (home of Piero della Francesca) and Monterchi.
Local points of interest from Maria
- Natural Waterfalls within 20–30 minutes on foot & Chestnut Forest surrounding the farm offers shade, wildlife, and remarkable silence.
- The hills surrounding Il Vigno are carved by numerous waterways that converge in the Singerna torrent - a spring-fed stream that flows through the valley just below the farm.
- The small hilltop village of Caprese Michelangelo, the birthplace of Michelangelo Buonarroti & Anghiari, the kind of place that takes most people by surprise. It sits on a ridge above the upper Tiber valley
- Within 30 minutes of Il Vigno, you’ll find some of the finest small-scale food and drink producers in Italy. Most are unknown outside their own valley. All are worth visiting — and most welcome guests who take the trouble to show up.
- Il Faggeto Azienda Agricola A two-hour olive oil tasting experience on a working farm - one of the most grounded and generous introductions to Tuscan agricultural life you’ll find.
- La Luppolaia, Founded in 2015 by Elena Brogialdi on her family’s farm just outside Caprese Michelangelo, La Luppolaia is the first agricultural brewery in the Valtiberina - and one of the most interesting small producers in the area.
