The Experience
This is a brilliant restoration – ancient soul teams with contemporary sophistication without a hint of a mistake or a whiff of pretension. Find reclaimed stone floors, chestnut beams and metalwork crafted by local artisans, along with wall paintings, plasterwork and a soaring internal chapel, famed for its exquisite acoustics – now a vibrant venue for concerts and ceremonies.
There are two sitting rooms, with comfy sofas and chairs, smart TVs and a Sonos sound system – the chapel also has a grand piano, turntable and speakers, so music lovers will be very happy. Bedrooms (one on the ground floor) have wonderful views, soft lighting, paintings, books and beautiful fabrics. Four have en suite bathrooms and the others share.
The kitchen is very big and very well equipped. Eat indoors or out in the lovely garden, serenaded by birds and cicadas. Views from the pool are dreamy, days will slip by in a delicious haze, it’s grand to be here.

Location
The neighbourhood
You may feel remote, with no other houses and surrounded by greenery, but Anghiari is just a ten-minute drive for shops, restaurants, a good deli, bank and post office. A marked trail takes you from the door for a major hike of 8.5km following the Torrente Sovara. Sansepolcro and Monterchi are both 20 mins and Arezzo 40 mins for a train station. Florence is one hour, 20 mins.
Local points of interest from Dominic & Yelena
- Walking the Sovara - The trailhead is 2 minutes down our gravel road. An 8.5km loop follows the Torrente Sovara through the Monti Rognosi reserve, about 2h30, with deer and nightingales for company. No signal out there, so download it first.
- Anghiari - 5km away, one of Italy's loveliest villages. Park free below the walls and take the lift up through the medieval rampart, stepping straight out into the old town. Leonardo painted the battle fought below it, in a fresco long since lost.
- Il Cappello di Paglia - Our nearest restaurant, just up the hill at Ponte alla Piera. Marilena pours a long list of local natural wines and sells them to take away. Wednesday to Sunday, lunch and dinner. Book ahead by phone or WhatsApp on +39 333 963 2188.
- Aliotti vineyard - A young couple took over their family's farm near Caprese Michelangelo and planted its first vines. They'll walk you round and pour what they've made. Pair the tasting with a morning in the village where Michelangelo was born.
- Piero della Francesca - Two of his masterpieces sit about 20 minutes away. The Madonna del Parto has a museum to herself in Monterchi, and Sansepolcro, where he was born, holds the Resurrection that Aldous Huxley called the greatest picture in the world.
- Arezzo antique fair - Italy's oldest and largest antiques market fills Arezzo's piazzas on the first Sunday of the month and the Saturday before it. 40 minutes away. Go early, stay for lunch, and expect to come home with something you hadn't planned on.
