The Experience

A cross between B&B and hotel – no room service but a friendly face on reception all day – the residenza idea is perfect for the independent traveller. Weave your way past antiques tucked under sloping ceilings and up to a wide, sun-flooded, pergola’d space for breakfast and sundowners with a classic panorama of Florence – thrilling at night!

The entire top floor of this restored 19th-century palazzo feels bright, light and inviting. Furnishings are colourful and fresh, bedrooms – some lofty, some more intimate – have beautiful silk-canopied four-poster beds, delicate prints on walls and mozzie-protected windows. Extras include WiFi, air conditioning and satellite TV and an honesty bar for drinks and snacks in the upstairs breakfast room.

Breakfast on fresh croissants, jams, local cheeses and hams then set off. Michelangelo’s David is at the Accademia is just around the corner, the Duomo is a ten-minute walk.

Reviews

Away from the streams of people in the proper centre, Antica Dimora Johlea offers a slightly off-central location with rewards of less noise and a more authentic Florentine neighbourhood flavour and plenty of lesser-known restaurant selections. Alessia and Daniele are on hand to suggest off-track choices. Breakfast or an aperitivo at sunset on the roof terrace is the highlight!

Very comfortable, relaxing and quality accommodation, like staying with friends. Extremely kind staff who helped to make our stay as enjoyable as possible and advised on tours, visits and transport. Good location for exploring the city on foot.

Fabulous B&B! Charming room (air conditioned) decorated in traditional Tuscan style with Florentine textiles/colours and dark wood. Excellent en-suite bathroom. Good Continental Breakfast with a range of dishes and drinks. The Reception is staffed all day and they were very friendly and helpful. Apart from the Reception area there is a Breakfast Room and Lounge, all decorated in the Florentine style. Last but not least there is the Roof Terrace with views across Florence and the surrounding hills. We stayed for five nights and it was perfect.

It's a rare find to stay in a place that enhances your visit. Divine Firenze shone even more thanks to Antica Dimora Johlea. Great location if you want to walk to the town center or take a bus. A pampering room for body and soul. Beautifully decorated with an artistic eye for details. The lounge upstairs with a soft sofa, art books, music and a coffee machine and cakes were an ideal place to wind down. And above all, excellent staff. Forget Tripadvisor and all the other guides, and take Gordana's advice on where to eat and where to go. We had 7 wonderful days and already plan our return.

Location

The neighbourhood

This is a lively, youthful area near the University but away from the mass tourists. Sant'Ambrogio Historic Food Market (more local than the popular tourist market San Lorenzo) is a 20-minute walk and lined with fantastic family-run restaurants. An oasis in the city is the Botanical Garden (second oldest in the world) open on weekends only with 200 trees and a rose garden in May.
