The Experience

A thoroughly happy and authentic home, criss-crossed by ancient beams, and with a super sitting room for reading quietly or watching a DVD – find an L-shaped sofa and an open fire for cooler days. Antique furniture, tiled floors and colour from the odd cushion or fabric completes the ‘woodcutter’s cottage’ feel.

The kitchen area is cosy, but has everything you need to cook and feed eight – everything is on one level so nobody will feel isolated. You’re left local cakes and some bottles of regional wine, there are also basics for cooking in the cupboards. Serena can organise an initial shop with a bit of notice, as well as spa treatments in Barga, and guided hiking tours.

You’ll sleep peacefully – four bedrooms in the main house (two doubles, two twins) and a double in the converted ‘metato’ next door share neat-as-a-pin bathrooms. Mostly you’ll be outside, the views from here are absolutely jaw-dropping.

We think you'll love

  • Being 800m above sea level, sitting on the terrace, listening to the birds and the breeze in the trees – it's magic up here!
  • Discovering from Serena the fabulous agriturismo restaurants nearby, serving honest local dishes
  • The wonderful mountain trails from the door – a guided tour will give you the best routes, and stop you getting lost

Reviews

I love this place. It is awesome, inspiring and humbling. I'd love to walk the trails, listen to the night owls, look at the inky star-filled night sky, amaze myself with the views and then splash in the pool and tell myself this is a wonderful world. Then, it would be over the barbecue, to cook up a wonderful dinner to enjoy on the terrace with a view like no other!

Location

The neighbourhood

Nature lovers and those who like to walk in the countryside will be in their element, especially with the views. It's just a 15-minute drive into Barga for some very good restaurants – some so good you need to book in advance, and of course shops for stocking up. They have festivals during summer, including jazz, and there are wonderful medieval buildings plus an 11th-century duomo.

Local points of interest from Andy & Sally

  • The nearest town is Barga, a 15-minute drive away. It is the quintessential Tuscan hilltop town, full of beautiful architecture and wonderful restaurants and shops.
  • An hour away is the provincial capital, Lucca, renowned for its medieval walls and towers. The perfect place to explore.
  • The enduring wonder of Pisa and Florence are both within two hours by car or train.
  • The coast at Viareggio or the beach at Marina di Vecchiano are both the ideal spot to laze by the sea.
