The Experience

Park your car in the piazza and walk the final 50 metres to the gated courtyard of this 17th-century Tuscan casa nobile. Inside, the generous lounge impresses — the owner is an interior designer who has worked her magic with muted colours, subtle artwork, antiques and contemporary furnishings.

A snug with a working fireplace sits at the back of the house, while the well-equipped kitchen invites everyone to gather as supper is prepared (a private chef can be arranged). A second kitchen below opens onto the dining terrace with views that spill over the garden and forested valley.

Upstairs, the five double bedrooms have magnificent beds and expansive views. Four bathrooms boast fancy Italian tiles and rain showers. Outside, terraced gardens offer flowers, fruit trees and shady corners. Dine al fresco on the south-facing terrace, swim in the private pool and, come nightfall, marvel at inky skies full of stars (no light pollution here).

Reviews

Il Poggio al Leccio is a study in reassuring excellence and originality. It beautifully combines the history of a noble Italian house with proportion, quality, detail, and craft in every feature. The contemporary, as evidenced by the engaging art, lighting, and furniture blended with the old, lends an air of relaxing permanence, perfect for escaping with loved ones into a fine and comfortable world.

Location

The neighbourhood

La Collina is an excellent local restaurant (50m walk) that serves hearty homemade pasta and artisan beers – with takeaways too. Valentino in nearby Fiano is also recommended for Tuscan hillside fare. For basics there's an alimentari in the village; a Carrefour in Freddana is a 10-minute drive away. Walking in the forested hills above the village is popular.
