The Experience

Part of a large building, this spacious apartment is set on top of a small hill surrounded by forest, with the village of Monticiano just visible through the trees. It shares with other apartments a big outdoor seating area and barbecue as well as lawns, courts and a swimming pool lined with sunbeds – the feel is blissfully peaceful and remote.

You have your own private entrance and fully-equipped kitchen, typically Tuscan in style, with old brick floors and wood-beamed ceilings. Bedrooms are on the first and second floors, all with private shower rooms.

A local guide can be booked for walking excursions, and cooking or yoga classes are available. Walk to Monticiano in about five minutes for a very small supermarket, a pharmacy and a simple restaurant, or drive to San Galgano, 7km away, for more choice including the ruins of a 13th-century Gothic church, the Abbey of San Galgano.

Location

The neighbourhood

Discover hilltop medieval villages and unspoilt hamlets with wonderful views and wiggly lanes winding through verdant countryside. The area is rich in history and among its main sights and attractions are the unique, outstanding Abbey of San Galgano and the Hermitage of Montesiepi which preserves the authentic 'Sword in the Stone'. There's a good golf course nearby and sublime walks.

Local points of interest from Diana Grandi

  • Casa Santa Maria at Villa Podernovo is in the Val di Merse regional park south of Siena, halfway between the Crete Senesi and the Maremma.
  • Visit the wonderful Crete Senesi for the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, Rapolano and Petriolo Spas, or the Maremma with its wild landscapes and clear blue sea (roughly 60km away).
  • Siena is known throughout the world for its Palio horserace and incredible artistic heritage. The uniquely beautiful old town has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All of Tuscany's other art cities are less than two hours away by car.
  • The Abbey of San Galgano and the Hermitage of Montesiepi which preserves the authentic 'Sword in the Stone' are just 7km away. Both are very popular for wedding celebrations, which makes Villa Podernovo a much sought after wedding venue.
  • Our villa is an ideal base for visiting some of Tuscany's most magical places, including the stunning Val d'Orcia with many beautiful small towns like Pienza, Montalcino, and Montepulciano.
  • Closeby hill toptowns: Chiusdino, Clle Val D'Elsa, Radicondoli, Casle D'Elsa.
