The Experience

Sitting on top of a small hill and surrounded by forest and trees, this ancient farming hamlet dates back to 1780. Il Focolare is very practical with a large, fully-equipped kitchen/diner and a seating area with sofa and armchair. Walls are painted a calm dove grey and the bedrooms both have double beds, one of which can be split into twins. There are two bathrooms with showers, soaps and slippers.

A local guide can be booked for walking excursions, and cooking or yoga classes are available. Walk to Monticiano in about five minutes for a very small supermarket, a pharmacy and a simple restaurant, or drive to San Galgano, 7km, for more choice including the ruins of a 13th-century Gothic church, the Abbey of San Galgano.

Wander the large gardens, find a seat in the shade or head to the pool for a float about followed by a sun bathe on a yielding lounger. It’s very quiet up here, with only birdsong to disrupt the quiet, so you should unwind nicely.

Location

The neighbourhood

Walks from the door are sublime - through peaceful woods. The restaurant in Monticiano serves authentic food, San Galgano has more choice - here you can visit the Hermitage of Montesiepi which houses the 'Sword in the Stone'. Walk in less than an hour to the Farma river and natural springs, drive 18km for an 18-hole golf course, return to a swim and a barbecue.

Diana has a small apartment at the rear of the property but does not live there permanently. Her secretary, Grazia, lives locally and is on site in the morning and evening, and otherwise always available should guests need to contact her by phone.
