The Experience

Come for a spot of R&R, surrounded by nature with your own private symphony of birdsong and the lulling sound of the Vez river – in spring and early summer there’s a wildflower meadow just waiting for your picnic rug. It’s a generous place too, with delicious breakfast and first meal ingredients waiting for you, and if you stay a bit longer your breakfast gets replenished each day – marvellous for those who don’t want to budge much.

Take a book to the living room with its huge windows beckoning the landscape indoors; on chilly days you can light the fire and listen to music. Two bedrooms (not huge but with gorgeous linens, super views and plump mattresses) are downstairs and share a gleaming shower room.

It’s a two-minute walk into the village, Sistelo, the first cultural landscape classified as a National Monument in Portugal. Footpaths surround you and the small river beaches are a short walk for swimming and picnics.

We think you'll love

  • The absolute silence apart from birdsong, the river and the rustling of leaves in the trees – it's hypnotic
  • Enjoying the ever-changing views from inside, feeling at one with all the nature enveloping you
  • Being left such generous provisions by the kind and helpful owners, and wandering into the village easily for supplies

Reviews

What a charming place! The best hosts, in the best landscape. The house has been restored while maintaining its rustic charm, yet providing a stay full of comfort. The sound of the water and the birdsong provide a complete immersion in nature, even more so when each window is a living painting, full of life. Perfect for a retreat, for experiencing peaceful and slow days.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's just a two-minute walk to the village for three restaurants, some cafés and a small grocery store which sells most things (except meat and fish). Arcos de Valdevez and Monção are both a 25-minute drive for bigger shops, a supermarket and more restaurants. This feels like a proper retreat from the bustle of towns though – settle into valley life and enjoy unspoilt nature.

Local points of interest from João Flores

  • The Terraces of Sistelo: Known as the "Portuguese Tibet", Sistelo is famous for its ancient agricultural terraces, carved into the mountainsides and recognised as a National Monument.
  • Walks from the Door: Leave the car behind and follow trails straight from the village, through stone paths, forests, viewpoints and the beautiful landscapes of the Vez Valley.
  • The Vez River: Below the village, the crystal-clear Vez River offers natural pools, river beaches and peaceful spots to swim, rest or simply listen to the water.
  • Peneda-Gerês National Park: A short drive away, Portugal’s only national park offers mountains, waterfalls, wild horses, traditional villages and unforgettable walking routes.
  • Local Food & Village Life: Discover family-run restaurants, local meats, cheeses, honey and seasonal produce — a generous taste of rural northern Portugal.
  • Silence, Stars & Slow Living: Away from crowds and city lights, Flores do Vez invites guests to slow down, read, walk, watch the stars and enjoy the rare luxury of quiet.
