The Experience

Drive through swaying pampas grass and umbrella pines to this bright pink cottage: the deep blue sea shimmers behind the house and a solemn terracotta warrior stands guard. Sheep graze the surrounding National Trust farmland and you’ve only an unspoilt meadow between you and Chesil Beach.

Find a large, sociable, open-plan kitchen (you can stock up with wine and Dorset delights in various farm shops and markets) dining and sitting room with high ceilings and bright kilims on oak floors. A collection of Victorian royal crests hang on the walls, there’s plenty of comfortable furniture, piles of DVDs, a swanky TV with Sky Q, good WiFi, all the kit you might need for cooking and a Bose speaker.

Two double bedrooms have finely dressed beds, glorious sea views and smart bathrooms with roll tops and travertine stone walls. Both bedrooms open onto a west-facing private terrace overlooking the garden, quite safe for toddlers and dogs.

It was lovely to drive to the Short House, along the historic ancient Labour in Vain lane, looking down across the fields to the sea to the horizon. The countryside and walks surrounding are breath-taking. A lovely place to unwind and relax. A place where it is almost like going back in time to old Dorset.

Even coasting down the drive to Short House is a treat: striking umbrella pines on either side with pampas grass in between that brush the car with a soothing whisper as you pass... A lovely house to escape to with only the sound of the waves to lull you to sleep. Great open-plan living space, a suntrap terrace and bedrooms with stunning sea views. Only a few hundred yards down the field to dramatic Chesil Beach - perfect for your dog to come along too. Andrew was friendly and has lots of tips about the area - crunch along the shingle for an outstanding fish lunch at The Club House restaurant.

I'm not sure I have the vocabulary to do the Short House justice. A simply beautiful, tranquil and uniquely located bolthole to escape the hustle and bustle of life. The facilities are perfect, - great kitchen & living area; two fantastic bedrooms and two great bathrooms...so far, so good; but then you get the 'garden'...a perfect 500 yard walk down to Chesil Beach. If there is a better back garden in the world I haven't found it. Couldn't recommend highly enough. Andrew & Julie; thank you for being such wonderful hosts - we will be back.

V pleasant cottage in an excellent location, close to Chesil Beach. Comfortable, nicely decorated and kitted out. Decent WiFi. Good for the dog too - plenty of running room and no long lists of restrictions.

Location

The neighbourhood

You can play tennis, hop on a horse from the riding stables, visit Abbotsbury Gardens or ancient Swannery by foot. Walk through a meadow to the beach or start wonderful coastal walks from the door. For swimming, Burton Bradstock or Fortuneswell are safer beaches. You can walk to West Bexington in 20 mins for The Manor Hotel or The Clubhouse or go down to West Bay for fish and chips.

Local points of interest from Andrew

Walk 45 minutes along the beach to the magical Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens. Tea & scones are very good in a Colonial Style cafe restaurant there, with a great terrace amongst the palm trees.
If you're up for it, another 20 minutes walk gets you to Abbotsbury's 13th century Swannery on the Fleet. Hundreds of swans in a beautiful setting and you can walk amongst them. Memorable. Check out their bouncing bomb exhibit; it was tested on the Fleet.
Bridport, the quintessential market town with a busy Saturday morning market and a brass band in the square by the Arts Centre, is 15 minutes away. The largest hat shop in the country is a very good place to buy a hat. They do wicked socks as well
West Bay (aka Broadchurch, as seen on telly) has a small fishing harbour, and the best fish & chips.
Go find a fossil or two on the beach at Lyme Regis; about 30 minutes away. Mark Hix has a restaurant there with the best view of Lyme Bay. On a clear day you can see Short House.
Take the kids for a splash in the multi jet fountains in Dorchester's Brewery Square; shops & restaurants and a new Odeon cinema; winner of the 2015 Cinema of the Year award. You have to go there to find out why.
