The Experience

The eccentricity of the house (its surprising layout, its nooks and crannies, its steps up and down) seems in perfect keeping with this little riverside village. And even in August it isn’t too busy with tourists, mainly locals. Spanish on one side, Portuguese on the other. Casa Verde’s covered patio is a blissful place to be as you watch the boats float up and down; find a leafy inner courtyard too, a terrace among the rooftops, a sunbathing deck and a private plunge pool. There’s also an outdoor cinema with a good choice of DVDs.

River boating, kayaking and swimming are the activities here -and a zip wire across the river, from one country to the next! Sporty friends and families with older kids will adore it. Inside: comfortable sofas, a well-equipped kitchen and a dining room with an outdoor fire.

Fresh flowers welcome you, along with coffee, tea, oranges, wine, cake, and logs for the fire.

Casa Verde is a quintessential Spanish house, full of cosy touches that make it feel like a home! It was clean, comfortable and well decorated, with bookshelves full of reading material, DVDs and games. The fully equipped kitchen made meals a joy & there are several outdoor spaces perfect for relaxing, including an outdoor cinema that we loved! Beautiful surrounding area with plenty of activities to do and space in the house for a family. We loved soaking up the view from the patio & drinking freshly squeezed orange juice in the mornings! Perfect place to unwind, adventure, or both!

We returned to the magical Sanlucar and Casa Verde for a second visit. It did not disappoint. The views from Casa Verde’s terrace of the river and the activities of the boating community enhance that magical experience. Casa Verde is a unique but very comfortable house full of character and charm with modern faculties, including air conditioning. Each bedroom is spacious with its own on-suite facilities. There are many places to visit in the surrounding area, as well as enjoying all that the river has to offer. Sanlucar has a few shops, a pharmacy and several decent restaurants.

Lovely traditional town house in a picturesque village, beautifully and artistically restored with modern comforts. Part of Andalusia that most Brits haven't discovered. Clean and well cared for - excellent service.

Peter, Wokingham

As a group of friends we stayed for five nights and were absolutely delighted with everything about our holiday. The house is sympathetically renovated with careful thought being given to all the living spaces and bedrooms. There is a choice of outside spaces too with quiet privacy and gorgeous views. The small town has family-run shops and restaurants going down to the river where you can take a little passenger ferry into Portugal. We did this one evening for a walk and a meal. Andalusia is a beautiful area, I highly recommend Casa Verde and we plan to return next year.

Beautifully appointed house in a quiet village on the river Guadiana opposite a small Portuguese town. (Alcoutim) Great outdoor and indoor spaces. This was a great location for a friends get together. Limited in places in the village to eat in the evenings but we found great places to have lunch out in larger towns within an hours drive and more choice across the river....foot passenger ferry available.

Gwyn, Loughborough

What a place! Sanlucar changes one's image of Spain, a real village with shops and cafes in an interesting area. And Portugal is only a ferry, dinghy or zip-wire trip over the river. Plenty of activities are available in the area and most villages have good authentic restaurants. Casa Verde is a jewel in this enchanting place. It is a well appointed property full of nooks and corners, courtyards, terraces and an open air cinema creating relaxing and interesting spaces. Each bedroom is comfortable and has its own bathroom.

What a wonderful house and location! We enjoyed the summer we never had in Scotland with temperatures of 18 degrees throughout the week and brilliant sunshine! The house is very well equipped - we miss the orange juicer already! The bed was luxuriously big and cosy and the living room was a perfect place to spend our Xmas afternoon lounging around and playing board games! Can't wait to come back soon! Many thanks!

Iona, Applecross

Fantastic holiday home in a lovely area. Lots to see and do, the cottage was very well equipped and the plunge pool and air con were fantastic as it was very hot whilst we were there. The boat was amazing as we could nip over to Alcoutim for a larger variety of restaurants. The kids loved the outdoor cinema with the big bean bags and the giant Jenga set. The different terraces provided everyone with a space to chill out and truly relax. Being just on the border with Portugal gave us lots of opportunities to explore. Would highly recommend.

Your first view of Casa Verde will set the scene for your holiday. With the river on your doorstep, breath-taking views from the terrace, a plunge- pool to dive into, an outdoor cinema with tons of DVD’S and the prettiest cottage imaginable, this is your perfect Andalucian retreat

A really great holiday house which we enjoyed as a couple but a group or extended family would also enjoy as there are 3 terraces so always an escape available ! Unfortunately we were unable to use the boats as my husband had a bad back during our stay but that would afford more fun and escapism. Bar with food 2 minutes walk and in Alcoutim on the opposite bank more restaurants and a delightful river beach where you can swim and bar with delicious barbecued sardines. Paddle boarding etc available in the season and highly recommend the zip wire. Jak the housekeeper was an absolute star.

I knew Casa Verde was going to special. It was recommended as a place to relax with old friends. The website was very helpful & Val was available to answer questions & prepare for our visit.Excellent journey we hired a car at Faro Airport & at the Villa we were met by Jax who had bought provisions for us on request. We felt at home immediately accommodation was outstanding personal touch made the stay extra special.I hadn’t realised how much fun the outdoor cinema would be.Beautiful village fun trips over to Acoutin in the water taxi gorgeous walks made this a trip to remember.Recommend a visit.

Marion, Southampton

We thoroughly enjoyed Casa Verde. The house is stylishly decorated and size wise it was perfect for us (a family of four) though could easily have accommodated another family. There is plenty of outdoor space - each of 4/5 terraces has different features and outlooks. With a very well equipped kitchen and semi-outdoor BBQ we self-catered quite a bit, but also loved the restaurants in the village on the other side of the river, easily reached using the 'house dinghy' or water taxi. Lots to do nearby, great beaches & close to nature. Lovely!

Matt, London

We had a wonderful stay at the beautiful, pristine and spacious Casa Verde..... drinks on the veranda, in the plunge pool, outdoor cinema surrounded by bougainvillea and jasmine, barbecues.... There are great places to walk, swim and eat nearby and interesting places to visit. Alcoutim, on the Portuguese side of the river can be reached by ferry dinghy or zip-wire! The local people are friendly and welcoming. Casa Verde is the perfect place for a happy, memorable holiday.

Alison, Clevedon

Casa Verde is a beautifully situated villa in the heart of Sanlúcar. The luxury accommodation, at an affordable price, overlooks the river and benefits from amazing sunsets accompanied with the chiming of local church bells ....from both Spain and uniquely Portugal. The relaxing pace of life is magnified by the gentle flow of the river, separating the two countries, where the local water taxi service provides a useful crossing. Casa Verde provides an exceptional base to escape from mundane tourism with the added benefit of glorious sunshine for our stay.

Neil, Stockport

Casa Verde is an absolutely stunning house in the middle of the small town of Sanlucar de Guadiana. With so many different spaces both outdoors and inside it's literally possible to get lost in there! Plenty of room for bigger parties. The small pool, the outdoor shower and especially the cinema-experience under a starry sky were some of the highlights. The surrounding area provides many good hikes and runs, and the free padel court was a great bonus as well. All in all a lovely stay in a lovely place, can't recommend enough if you're looking to relax and unwind!

Niklas, Helsinki

We stayed at Casa Verde in the second week of October and the weather was perfect - not too hot, not too cold. The house itself is a gem, beautifully fitted out and cleverly laid out. I loved all the little corners I could escape to with a book; but enjoyed coming back to the big communal spaces for food and drink and chat. Sanlucar is a charming village and the zip-wire a must. It's 16 kms from the main road so feels completely cut off but is a thriving little community. We loved our stay and would recommed the beach bar in Alcoutim and the fantastic winery of Delea a Marca just 25kms away.

Thomas, Sheringham

What a fantastic break! The house is quirky (in a good way) and its location, overlooking the river, is a delight - especially at night when seated on the terrace as you have a lovely view of the lights of the small village on the opposite side. There is a zip-wire nearby (not too scary) which takes you across the river from Spain to Portugal. Sanlucar is small and picturesque but it is on the side of a hill so there is a bit of climbing, The locals are friendly. Plenty to do. Can thoroughly recommend the whole experience.

Graham, Staines-upon-Thames

Eight good friends looking to catch some late sun. Sanluca was new to us but what a find. Casa Verde was v.clean and v.tasteful. Each day began and ended, seated on the terrace, with morning coffee and sundowners, whilst taking in the breathtaking view. Eating out was so cheap but check out Remy’s general store, she has everything! Highlights: the cross-border zip-wire, a tour of Delea a Marca Vineyard (Villablanca) and our last night at the villa, watching a dvd under the stars with wine, tapas and jasmine. It was the perfect end to a great get-away. Thank you Casa Verde, we won’t forget you.

Tracey, Tunbridge Wells

Delightful, characterful Casa, spacious and comfortable, a home from home. Lovely to cook in the kitchen and eat on the terrace watching riverlife go by, listening to the cicadas and the church bells. A splendind spot to relax and the area is also full of variety to explore: river beaches, boat trips, Ayamonte old town cafe culture, endless sandy beaches at Isla Cristina, Portuguese hill towns, nature and architecture, two different languages and cultures. Thoroughly recommended.

Max

Beautiful Casa in a delightful village. Unspoilt, friendly, gentle pace of life. Ideal for that breakaway from the frenzy of the daily grind of the world. Spacious house with all facilities needed for winding down and seeing what is important in life. Loved the house, the village, the people and especially the terrace to view the river and hear the sounds of life and music from across the river. Hope to return.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in the heart of the charming white village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana with its cobbled alleyways and riverside jetty. The house sits in a prominent position looking across the river to the Portuguese village of Alcoutim. Borrow the owner's boat if you have a license, zip wire over, or call the 'on demand' ferry. Within a five-minute walk there are shops, a bakery and three restaurants.

Local points of interest from Val Woodhouse

  • The lovely river Guadiana which winds its way between Portugal and Spain, is always changing, always moving and is a place to dream as you bob down the river in our dinghy or in a kayak. Or go for a swim on the local village pool, just a 5 minute walk away
  • Climb up to the castle in the village for the most fantastic view, and then take the thrilling ride on the zipwire across to Portugal. Better still you arrive there 59 minutes earlier than when you left!
  • Enjoying a drink - particularly a gin and tonic (they are huge!) - at the beach bar in the village and trying some of the tasty tapas whilst watching the reflections on the water. Very cool!.
  • Staying in March and November and finding that it is so warm that a T-shirt is still enough to wear even outside at 11 o'clock at night!
  • Ambling down the river path to the finca, picking the oranges and filling a big bag, to then walk back, squeezing them to make juice and ice-cream. Very very satisfying.
  • Finding one of the many fiestas taking place in the village, watching the donkeys race through the narrow streets, barbeque of sardines and a dance with the locals. Or watch the Virgin del Carmen statue cross the river and back. That is special, indeed
