The Experience

If it’s solitude you’re after, Padre Avilés is one of the quietest and most relaxing spots in Andalusia, up in the hills 20 minutes from Málaga – and half an hour from the airport. It’s a converted 17th-century convent steeped in history. And behind its walls lie seven excellently equipped and spacious apartments, each with its own front door and private terrace with barbecues.

Bedrooms are light and airy, bedding crisp and white, mattresses orthopaedic; bathrooms have decent sinks and pretty mosaics; the cabin-style kitchen-diners have wood-burning stoves for chillier nights and English and Spanish TV channels. Families will not want to leave: there are two separate play areas, bikes, tennis courts, hammocks and two pools.

Take a well-worn path round the 180-acre estate scattered with olive and almond trees, or make for the national park just up the road. The nearest village, Olías is 2kms away for a restaurant, Bar Juan.

Reviews

I was made to feel instantly at home by Claire who enthusiastically recounted stories of how they found the properties, the project to renovate them and how they now run them. This is a great place for families and groups who want to get together and eat and relax. They make their own olive oil from the many acres of Algarrobo olives and even produce their own honey. You'll go home renewed.

Padre Aviles is the kind of place where you feel yourself relax as soon as you drive through the gate. The location is spectacular - high up in the hills so lots of peace and amazing views, surrounded by fig and olive trees, but close enough to the coast, local suburbs and Malaga city itself that there's always lots to do. The apartments are immaculate, well-furnished and have everything we needed, the pools are divine and we enjoyed playing some tennis in the evenings. A heavenly place to stay and we are already making plans to return later this year!

What a most beautiful place! Set in the hills high above Malaga lies this converted convent. We stayed for 8 days in a first floor apartment with 2 bedrooms, sitting area, kitchen with all amenities inc dishwasher and washing machine plus balcony with incredible view down to the sea. And a huge pool (much bigger than anyone else's!) and lots of sitting out places under sunshades. So relaxing... total quiet - just the sound of gentle breeze and birds. If you want an executive style retreat away from the bright lights and everybody else, this is for you. My wife and I loved it.

Padre Aviles is a true gem, located up the hill, a 10-15 minute drive to/from the supermarket and roads that easily connect you to center city Malaga and get you on your way to enjoy day trips to explore the Andalucia area. Enjoy a breath taking view, clean and well equipped accommodations and access to 2 pools, a toddler playground and 2 tennis courts. The Olivo is on the 2nd floor with two good-sized bedrooms, a spacious and clean bathroom, and a terrace that overlooks a beautiful olive tree and the pool. Get spoiled by the tranquility of Padre Aviles and the warmth of the owners!

What a gem. We spent a wonderful week here in July 2019. Just a 10 minute drive from the main coastal road, 20 minutes from Malaga. Wonderful pool and spectacular views over the hills towards the sea. Very clean apartment. The owners, David and Claire, were always around to answer any questions or give a few hints about where to go. A special shout out to their lovely daughter, Sophie, who made us delicious homemade vegan brownies. A lovely touch. We will definitely be back!

Location

The neighbourhood

Walks from the door are through olive groves. Málaga city centre is 20 minutes away with a vast variety of things to do and some of the best museums in Spain; Picasso was born here. The food offering is exceptional, from seafood beach bars to international cooking at all levels. La Cala Del Moral is a small traditional seaside town about 15 mins away by car for authentic paella on a Sunday.

Local points of interest from Claire & David Parish

  • Beautiful 17th Century convent with the most amazing views surrounded by 180 acres of Olive and almond trees. Great for total peace and quiet but only 10 mins by car from the local town.
  • Unknown to most, Malaga (20 mins way) is a lovely city, with wonderful tapas restaurants, cafes and lots to visit. The new Muelle Uno in the port has recently opened offering a lovely stroll past yatchs, good shopping and restaurants.
  • Visit the Alcazaba, Picasso Museum, Malaga Cathedral. Or why not venture to the botanical gardens, El chorro, Nerja, Frigiliana. So much to do and see in Andalucia the list goes on.
  • We have wonderful pedestrianized promenades along the sea. Nothing nicer than sitting down having a Mojito or two and watching the restaurants preparing the sardines on the BBQs (old fishing boats) and seeing families out for their daily stroll.
  • For the keen sportsmen and women, we are perfectly situated for great walks, runs and bike rides with a local bike shop renting great bikes. Whether it be for training or more leisurely cycles. Or just dip into the 20 m pool for those daily lengths!

Introducing

Claire & David Parish

Claire was a chef on yachts where she met her husband David, still a sea captain. They moved to Spain over 20 years ago and converted the old Cortijo or country estate buildings into a private house with two adjoining apartments. The others have been converted from what were the stables. Claire keeps everything organised, will meet and greet and let you know where to pick up food on your way.
