The Experience

Wend your way up, past manicured villas to Al Ladino – private and quiet, yet far from remote. Its sister, El Monte Bajo, is next door. Your open-plan kitchen/living room has a rustic, communal feel; wood abounds and there’s a lovely old estufa (stove) for that early morning cuppa or a wood-burner for chillier evenings. Children will adore splashing in the pool. The kitchen is the hub of the house, so cooks won’t feel out of the loop when everyone else is relaxing.

Bedrooms are unfussy and comfortable, with good linen, and one is off the sunny terrace – just outside; bathrooms are simple with good towels and soaps. Your welcome basket brims with seasonal fruit, tuna in olive oil, black bread, orange juice, cava…When you’ve devoured a sumptuous dinner (a cook can be arranged for a slap-up meal) and had a good night’s sleep, there’s plenty to get stuck into nearby.

Nerja, with all its restaurants and bars is a 10-minute drive.

Reviews

The pretty property has a really special feel about it. It is peaceful and relaxes you straight away as you walk in. I loved the wide open-plan kitchen and living area with large wood-burner; perfect for a romantic night on cooler evenings. The main bedroom is grand with a large bed and a stunning en-suite bathroom and the views across the pool catch you at every corner.

We had a lovely week in the cottage it is ideal for a self catering holiday everything you need is provided. The view from the cottage is beautiful, it is very private. Danny provides all the information you require which was very helpful. We would recommend Al Ladino.

Hester, Brighton

The description of El Ladino as a “Rustic Cottage” doesn’t seem generous enough. It is such a lovely, beautifully decorated, traditional house with a spectacular view down the hill to Nerja. Our two children loved the swimming pool and adopted the two local cats for the duration of our stay. Many thanks to Danny for providing so much useful information including great restaurants. We also had a peek at Danny’s much larger house next door which is lovely with a beautiful garden, pool and ponds complete with frogs and dragon flies.

Anita, Dublin

Myself, husband and two kids stayed at Danny’s enchanting cottage for a week. The photos on the website fall short of how lovely the property and view are. It was a very relaxing, tranquil location while only a short drive/cycle from the centre of Nerja. The property is well equipped and pretty with everything you could need for a self catering break. When we arrived a fabulous basket of local produce was waiting for us with wild flowers dispersed around the cottage. Danny was also very helpful on local knowledge and restaurants which is always nice. I’d definitely recommend this cottage.

Claire, London

We visited this beautiful cottage for the first time this summer with my two young sons. When we arrived we were blown away by how beautiful and rustic it was and how well kept and furnished inside and out. So much love and care to detail has gone into making this gorgeous property perfect for any one staying. Me and my family had the most wonderful week here. It is lovely and quiet and looks out onto breath taking scenery . We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return one day.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are magical views from here of mountains and sea. Admire all the fruit trees, walk down to the beach (uphill on the way back) where you'll find a good beach bar, Chiringuito Cacola. Visit the pretty town of Frigiliana, go skiing in the Sierra Nevada (an hour's drive). The beach is just two kilometres away, so you really can ski in the in the morning and swim in the afternoon.

Local points of interest from Dan Bowers

  • 3km down the beach from the former fishing village of Nerja, this rustic cottage has the most privileged location, the ultimate in tranquility, 'vivir en un estado perpetual de paz & tranquilidad'
  • Be close to nature where only only the birds tweet, gasp at heartstopping unbroken views over the sea & mountains
  • Visit the white washed mountain village of Frigiliana, Nerja's 'Balcon de Europa' a proud tree lined 'paseo' which stretches out of town providing spectacular views out to sea
  • Enjoy a wide range of restaurants serving authentic local dishes, fresh local fish & a multitude of international cuisines
  • Explore 'Las Cuevas De Nerja', the Caves of Nerja, an extraordinary force of nature, discovered just over 50 years ago by three local schoolboys while at play. 40 minutes from Malaga, Granada is an hour to the east & Seville two hours inland

Introducing

Dan Bowers

Danny happened across El Monte Bajo and Al Ladino more than 20 years ago and loved them for their unspoilt views, tranquility, clean fresh air and positive energy. Since buying the houses he's been rebuilding and improving them, all whilst working to preserve their old-world Spanish character. José Antonio is the caretaker and the local contact during your stay, on hand for anything.
