A hop from the coast. Wend your way up, past manicured villas to Al Ladino – private and quiet, yet far from remote. Its sister, El Monte Bajo, is next door. Your open-plan kitchen/living room has a rustic, communal feel; wood abounds and there’s a lovely old estufa (stove) for that early morning cuppa. A tiny window, complete with its original old grille, adds character. The kitchen is the hub of the house, so cooks won’t feel out of the loop when everyone else is relaxing. Bedrooms are unfussy and comfortable, with good linen, and one is off the sunny terrace – just outside; bathrooms are simple with good towels and soaps. Your welcome basket brims with seasonal fruit, tuna in olive oil, black bread, orange juice, cava… When you’ve devoured a sumptuous dinner (a cook can be arranged for a slap-up meal) and had a good night’s sleep, there’s plenty to get stuck into nearby: visit the pretty town of Frigiliana, go skiing in the Sierra Nevada (an hour’s drive). The beach – El Playazo – is just two kilometres away, so you really can ski in the morning and swim in the afternoon at certain times of the year! Ts&Cs are strict so do be sure to check when booking.
