The Experience

You have the whole of the first floor in the heart of the medieval pedestrian quarter, with higgledy-piggledy walls, once part of the town’s defence, and vibrant bougainvillea dripping over facades and balconies. There are two main sitting areas – one with a balcony looking over the street and a beautiful square, the other with windows to the quiet back street.

The bedroom is romantic; white walls enhance the natural light which streams through the balcony window, a large double bed is beautifully dressed with a good thick mattress, and there is a very attractive green and white tiled floor. The roomy kitchen combines country style with stainless steel, and has all you need. You’re left some Catalan cava to celebrate your arrival.

Spend your days exploring, take wine tours, eat good Catalan food in a choice of restaurants, head to sandy beaches for swimming and water sports.

Reviews

This is a delightful historic townhouse renovated with local materials and beautiful furniture pieces, located in an amazing village, considered to be a true gem in the region. Walk up the cobblestone streets to the top to admire 360-degree views to the Empordà plane and the sea. Swim at nearby beaches, return to enjoy the quiet evenings in the village.

Location

The neighbourhood

A busy tourist spot, but quieter out of season. You'll eat well: Pals is famous for its locally grown rice dishes and at each restaurant (not all of them open all year) you'll find locally sourced vegetables, sustainable farming and traditional Catalan cooking. The local wineries give tours, you can hire bikes, and you're just a short drive or cycle to some sandy beaches and glorious rocky coves.

Local points of interest from Sarah & Matt

  • Beautiful walks and cycle rides in the countryside to other medieval villages and wineries (eg Celler Mas Geli) start just a few steps from the house - or to nearby Pals beach.
  • The delightful Jardíns de Cap Roig (botanical gardens) in Calella de Palafrugell are a must-see with jaw-dropping views of the Mediterranean.
  • Some of the most beautiful beaches on the Costa Brava are nearby - including Tamarui, Llfranc, Aiguablava and Sa Reira - linked by the stunning Cami de Ronda coastal path.
  • The area is famous for its great restaurants – and rice dishes (rice is grown locally) – many within walking distance like El Pedro and Antic Casino. There's a 2-star Michelin place a short drive away.
  • Pals itself is widely considered the most beautiful of all the medieval villages in the Baix Empordá region (first documented in the year 889) with cobbled streets, a Romanesque/Gothic church, the watchtower – El Torre de les Hores - plus artisan shops.
  • Stunning Girona city (under an hour by car) plus Figueres (45 mins) and Cadaqués (75 mins)– both famous for all-things Dali – make for a great day trip from Pals.
