The Experience
There’s a wonderfully relaxed, sociable feel here with plenty of space for everyone to spread out and a beautiful new kitchen – although if you prefer to be catered for this is entirely possible and the owners can give you the contact details of some good local chefs
You’ll find a welcome hamper of freshly-baked sourdough, a jar of award-winning marmalade plus homemade cakes and biscuits. On sunny days, spill out into the gardens with mature trees and smooth lawns, join the Coast-to-Coast path for serious walking and biking or hop on the wonderfully scenic Carlisle to Settle railway.
This is a much quieter part of the county yet you can get to everything easily. Smardale nature reserve is on your doorstep and Kirkby Stephen is about seven miles away for stocking up. Return to deep comfort, dark skies, a barbecue and a fire pit.

Had a most enjoyable stay. We were very well looked after in this lovely old house. Homemade pizzas and breakfasts were excellent.

The owner Peter is the nicest and most helpful host that you could ever wish for ( and we're not even related!) By chance, he is a sourdough expert and kindly gave me advice that has improved my bread beyond recognition, worth the stay just for that.

Peter and Amanda are brilliant hosts. We felt very relaxed and it was wonderful to return from a tramp in the hills, to be able to sit beside a roaring fire with a pot of tea and a slice of delicious home made cake.

A wonderfully chilled hotel. Gorgeous views, great walks on the doorstep, fabulous food, fantastic hosts, comfortable rooms, warm and friendly sitting areas. A great ‘get away from it all’. We’ll definitely be back.

Location
The neighbourhood
The best way to discover this quiet part of the Yorkshire Dales is on foot or by bike. Roads are not busy and there are some challenging routes over hills and down dales with magnificent scenery and wildlife. If you want to see the Lakes or take a boat trip, Windermere is nearest and you can go via Kendal for some famous mint cake.
Local points of interest from Peter & Amanda Jaques-Walker
- We are within the newly extended Yorkshire Dales National Park, and well placed for day trips into the Lake District. We are just ten minutes from Junction 38 (Tebay) on the M6, making us the ideal stop off to break up long journeys.
- We are a 2 mile walk from the village of Ravenstonedale, which boasts two cosy pubs, both serving excellent food.We overlook the Howgill Fells - the perfect place to go walking in splendid isolation, with only the wild fell ponies for company.
- Two classic long distance footpaths – the Coast to Coast and the Dales High Way - run right past Brownber Hall. If you don’t fancy dragging all your spare clothes around, there are a number of bag carrying companies who can do the hard work for you!
- Our favourite walk right from the front door (about a 2 hour round trip) is through the Smardale Gill Nature Reserve to the Smardale Gill Viaduct. This is a real hidden treasure, tucked away in a secluded valley holding sights of historical interest.
- Road cyclists can explore the network of quiet lanes surrounding the house, which lead to some fantastic routes and some more challenging climbs, such as Tan Hill or the Lakes & Dales Loop. We can provide safe storage for bikes in the basement.
- We are one of the darkest sky areas in England, which provides great opportunities for star gazing – particularly up on the fell behind the Hall. Rusty the red squirrel is a regular unofficial guest at Brownber Hall. He usually likes to put on a good show

Introducing
Peter & Amanda Jaques-Walker
Peter and Amanda moved to Cumbria from London in 2016 and are young, friendly, knowledgeable and brilliant at hosting. They live in an apartment at Brownber, so always on hand if you need them at the House or Hall and only a few miles down the road if you're staying at Gatehouse which is owned and designed by Amanda's sister, Georgina.
Wonderful family memories made at this big old house in stunning countryside. The children adored the layout (perfect for hide and seek) and the kitchen was fun to cook in with everybody pitching in. The terrace is glorious, with sheep and cows to stare at during the day and a firepit glowing at night.
