The Experience
On the western side of Windermere, pretty Hawkshead is a gorgeous base for exploring the Lakes, Beatrix Potter’s house and the surrounding unspoilt hills, tarns and dramatic fells. Talking of drama, you stay in a beautifully restored, opulent 1700s inn, set in the heart of the village.
Inside, the wood-burner glows in the atmospheric bar. Sip a hand-pulled local ale or glass of wine and order from the light bites and sandwiches lunch menu, or the seasonal dinner menu – breakfast is served here too. There’s a dining room for Sunday lunches and a south-facing patio for drinks in the summer with views of the church.
Original features – low ceilings, ancient beams, flagged floors – are set off by good art, deep colours and striking wallpapers. Individually styled bedrooms aren’t huge but come dressed in gorgeous linens with pampering en suite bathrooms. Strike out to Wordsworth country, it’s easy to see what seduced him.

Location
The neighbourhood
Take a picnic to Tarn Hows, walk or pedal around Grizedale Forest discovering trails and sculptures, or get up high on a Go Ape adventure. Beatrix Potter’s House, Hill Top, is 2.5 miles away — best to book ahead. Windermere and Ambleside are both under 10 miles but for a quieter lake experience, visit Esthwaite Water (one mile). For Michelin dining, try Ambleside (five miles).
