The Experience
This idyllic waterfront retreat perched on the banks of the creek is a haven from the hustle and bustle of life. Once you turn off the road running between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth you’ll feel miles from anywhere. Originally a boathouse, the interiors have been transformed into a rustic-chic bolthole, all deep navy blues, elegant mahogany and brass fittings.
You might find it tricky to pull yourself away from the squishy window seat, handily positioned near the roaring wood-burner, with its mesmerising watery views over the Kingsbridge Ria. Owner Miranda has filled the cabin with discovered treasures, antiques and curios, plus books and games for rainy days. The kitchen is top-notch and you climb a small staircase to your en suite bedroom.
Step out to your terrace to listen to the water and birdsong, take the ladder down to the shore and kayak to Kinsgbridge for lunch, return and spend the evening telling stories by the firepit.

Location
The neighbourhood
Kingsbridge (one mile) is packed with shops, delis, restaurants, cafés, art galleries and even a small cinema. It's a 15-minute stroll or, at high tide, you can borrow the kayak and paddle there. For eating out try: award-winning restaurants Wild Artichokes, Jamie's 27 or Mahabharat Indian restaurant and takeaway. Hop on the bus to arty Totnes, potter around boaty Salcombe or walk the South Hams.
Local points of interest from Miranda Gardiner
- You’ll hit the unique sweet spot of feeling like you’re a million miles from anywhere - a place where no one will find you - and yet have every convenience at your fingertips.
- The centre of South Devon’s Foodie Heaven. On our doorstep, Kingsbridge, we have Jane Baxter’s Wild Artichokes & 27, a restaurant by a Chef of the Year. Authentic pubs: The Journey’s End, Ringmore & The Cott, Dartington, winner, UK Pub of the Year.
- You can watch the tide ebb and flow, whatever the weather, from the comfort of the window seat or deck loungers. Paddle out on our kayaks to a local pub and explore the Kingsbridge Ria.
- Between a Boutique Vineyard & Artisan Distillery? Calancombe Estate offers a cellar door experience: wine tastings, lunch & tours of the vineyard. Their creamy bubbly rivals Champagne. Make your own bespoke Gin at the Salcombe Gin School
- Individual market towns with independent characters. Totnes: bohemian and full of independent stores & coffee shops, Kingsbridge: farm shop provisions and everything you need. Ashburton: antique Mecca.
- You’re never far from the relaxing effects of being by the water, whether riverside walks straight the cabin, wild sea swimming in the morning sun with a coffee afterwards from a beach cafe or taking in sections of the coastal footpath.

Introducing
Miranda Gardiner
Miranda lives in her pretty cottage nearby where she also has her artist's studio. Multi-talented, she is also a cookery book writer and interior designer who sources and curates artefacts and antiques from her travels, as displayed in the cabin. Her attention to detail is razor sharp and she is a generous host, happy to share information and suggestions about the local area.
We had a wonderful stay at Bowcombe Boathouse! Rain or shine it was such a special place to spend our summer holiday. Whether we were sunning ourselves on the deck, having an early morning cup of tea on the window seat, or taking Miranda's kayaks out for a spin, we were surrounded by the changing light and colours on the water. Miranda's background as an artist shines through in the interiors, clearly put together with much love and creativity to make a relaxing and beautiful space.
