The Experience
Views soar up the Jurassic coast all the way to Chesil Beach and on to Portland Bill. It sits high on the hill with one foot in town and the other paddling in the water. Directly below, the Cobb curls into the sea. Outside, there’s a sun-trapping garden, where guests fall asleep in deckchairs, then a lookout tower with big sea views for a romantic dinner for two.
Inside, an easy elegance flows: stripped wood floors, windows everywhere, an airy bar for pre-dinner drinks, an attractive sitting room with lots of books. There’s a smart breakfast room (delicious continental or full English, smoked salmon with avocado, poached eggs) that could double as a ballroom, then a sun-filled conservatory for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Both offer tasty, local food – perhaps Lyme Bay scallops, chicken with cavolo nero, a white chocolate mousse.

My wife and I enjoyed another return visit to The Alexandra Hotel in Lyme Regis. We have always been impressed by the helpfulness and courtesy of the Staff and we found that to be the case on this visit. The hotel is in a superb location on the Cliff top above Lyme Beach and the views are spectacular. Every room we have stayed in during our visits has been comfortable, spacious and well equipped. The Breakfasts and Dinners are very well prepared and served, and make delicious meals. We have already booked our next visit.

We had a wonderful stay at the beauiful Alexandra Hotel to celebrate a special birthday. Our room was extremely comfortable and we had a sea looking out over their garden. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. We had great meals in the light and airy restaurant. We couldn't have had a better stay and will return.

The Alexandra Hotel & Restaurant benefits from beautiful architecture, charming gardens & grounds with commanding views of both the Cobb & Golden Cap & Jurassic coastline. There is a beautiful Dining Orangery, contemporary breakfast room, Lounge / drawing room and comfortable bedrooms with great views of the sea and coastline. Staff are polite & welcoming and it is one of the first things that you notice. If you are looking for something very special, with traditional values and exceptional hospitality, then, you have found it. Highly Recommended. Thank you to all the staff for their care.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're within walking distance of all the shops and restaurants on the high street. The beach is a 2-minute walk for lovely picnics, swimming and paddle boarding, foraging for fossils. Sandy beaches are also nearby and you can join the Coast Path with a packed lunch ordered from the hotel. There are plenty of activities from January's costumed hurl into the sea to fireworks in November.
Local points of interest from Kathryn Haskins
- Guided Fossil Hunting TripsAs part of England’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, the beaches around Lyme Regis are among the best on the ‘Jurassic Coast’ to begin your hunt for fossils.
- Rock Pooling AdventuresOur guide will introduce you to a rock pool like never before! You will hunt for and learn about the creatures that live in these wonderful little habitats, teaming with life.
- On the SeaWater sports are a major part of life in Lyme. Swimming, Water Skiing, Sailing and Windsurfing keep the famous Cobb Harbour alive with activity during the summer months.
- Coastal pleasure trips, mackerel fishing and deep sea fishing are all available from Lyme’s quaint harbour.
- Nature WalksThere are many ‘Heritage’ coastal pathways both east and west of the town. As these paths wind their way along cliffs and through woodlands, stunning sea and landscapes may be enjoyed.
- Houses & GardensMany wonderful private houses, gardens and National Trust properties are open to the public in the Devon and Dorset area. We are happy to arrange transport and packed lunches should you wish to enjoy a ‘day away’.

I spent a week at The Alexandra Hotel, Lyme Regis at the end of August/beginning of September. Staying at the Alexandra you are right in the centre of town with sea/beach and all amenities just outside. However, it's like staying at a comfy, country house hotel - peaceful and calm. All the staff were helpful and courteous and I felt appreciated as a guest. Dining in the conservatory was a lovely experience - food, service and atmosphere - perfect.
