The Experience

Much care and flair has been poured into this 1937 building, the birthplace of Wilbert Awdry who created Thomas the Tank Engine. Through clever use of space and with stylish design ideas, the open-plan bar area is a joy for sybarites with sofas, big lamps, bookshelves, stoves and fresh flowers – a super spot to relax with a drink and have a peek at the menu. All is seasonal and freshly cooked by a team of chefs and you’ll find pub classics as well as more inventive dishes.

Bedrooms (those on the ground floor with small terraces, the first floor ones with balconies and some interconnecting for families) all have air conditioning, superb beds and linens, radios and welcome treats, and swish bathrooms with Bramley soaps and lotions, cosy robes and slippers. The breakfast menu will please everybody, with healthy choices alongside heartier plates, and vegetarian options.

The front terrace is just the ticket for long summer evenings.

Reviews

Striking thatched pub close to Winchester and the New Forest and Heartwood's most ambitious renovation project, opened in March 2026. Tardis-like, the building extends back (unseen) from the contemporary pub to 58 stylishly designed rooms, some with terraces or balconies, in a modern extension. Expect high levels of comfort and welcome detail touches. Good seasonal food and attentive staff.
