The Experience

This converted granary and calf shed is set in a hollow across from Steve and Agnieszka’s house but feels totally secluded, with only the sound of birdsong and views of horses, fields and scattered farm buildings in the distance.

The large, bright and well-equipped kitchen/diner has plenty of room to both cook and hang out, and French doors lead out onto a courtyard with a swimming pool. Steve will leave you a welcome hamper with local produce, plus logs for the wood-burner. He’ll even curate a collection of vinyl records and books according to preference. There’s a huge window seat overlooking the garden in the sitting room and a projector screen for watching movies cinema-style.

Walking and cycling tracks from the house link to the coast and are great for wildlife and bird-spotting. The nearest pub is a 10-minute walk and serves food and a good pint. A longer walk or a seven-minute drive takes you to quirky Ventnor with its great beach, antique shops and interesting pubs and restaurants.

Reviews

A place to truly get away to the country - secluded, peaceful, comfortable. Relax and just read a book - sit by the pool or in the hammock on the garden terrace and soak in the views across the valley. Catch glimpses of the local wildlife from the garden - rabbits, bats, badgers, owls and much more, or ramble further afield through local woods and fields. Great helpful, knowledgeable hosts.

We love staying at the Granary and have already booked again for next year! The house is well-designed, comfortable and spacious - perfect for relaxing, reading, listening to music and swimming in the lovely private pool. We enjoyed walks up onto the Downs and over to Ventnor, picking sloes and blackberries en route. The owners, Steve and Ag, are very friendly and live in the farmhouse next door. They are always available, if needed, for help and advice. A great find!

Harriet, Sutton

We're repeat visitors to The Granary and honestly can't imagine staying anywhere else on the Isle of Wight! The property is super stylish and so comfortable. The location is perfect — we absolutely love the idyllic pool and walks up the hill to collect blackberries. It’s also the perfect base to enjoy the island’s fantastic beaches and restaurants, or for a long bike ride. Thank you for another brilliant stay. Can't wait for our next visit!

I can't recommend The Granary enough, whilst at the same time wanting to keep this idyllic find to ourselves! This was our third stay at The Granary, as with every visit, it was perfect. The Granary is beautifully designed and decorated, providing a tranquil environment to truly relax. The perfect location in a quiet rural spot near to beautiful Ventnor and so many of the Island's attractions. We'd recommend the nearby Donkey Sanctuary, walking to Steephill Cove and the quiet beauty of Priory Bay. Steve and Ag are always welcoming and at hand to help, providing expert islander tips!

Aman, London

A truly incredible experience. Steve made us (wife and 2 year old daughter) feel welcome and informed so we could make the most of our trip. I have been fortunate to have travelled across the world but this has to be up there in terms of setting (a hidden part of IoW with great walks and costal views) , interior style& finish (reminded me of a. Grand designs episode), quality of consumables/utilities and hosting (literally everything has been thought about and executed to a high level, incl. COVID prec.). I am selfishly hesitant to write this as it lifts the lid on IoW best kept secret!

Location

The neighbourhood

The immediate area surrounding The Granary is soft, undulating countryside teeming with wildlife and nature trails. There's a lovely walk to Ventnor over the downs that takes around an hour, and Steve recommends Stripped for gourmet burgers, including vegan options, and the Spyglass Inn, a famous pub with glorious views over the bay. The Smoking Lobster is a seafood restaurant with a good reputation and the Volunteer is a tiny old pub full of character.

Local points of interest from Steve

  • You can turn your time here into a rejuvenating (or invigorating) retreat by booking yoga sessions.
  • Manor Bottom is a haven for wildlife. Whilst here you will probably see badgers, owls, bats, and many kinds of birds from Sparrowhawks to wrens, from woodpeckers to song thrushes.
  • Many great rides and walks start at The Granary. You can cycle the red squirrel train from almost the from door, join the round Island route and head off all the way to the Needles, or walk up to the downs to see the exquisite sunsets.
  • The Island has so many wonderful beaches, from the foodie cove at Steephill, the deserted sands of Atherfield, or the surfer beach at Compton Bay. Whatever your personality, there is a beach for you!
  • The Island had many great festivals, from the indie Ventnor Fringe, to the global Isle of Wight Festival. Check out more on our website.
  • There are many great food and drink producers on The Island - we have a gin distillery, two vineyards, great bread and cheese makers and well as producing delicious fruits and veg such as garlic, asparagus, tomatoes, better than on the mainland

Introducing

Steve

Steve and Agnieszka live just across the bridleway with their two young children and moved here from London as they wanted the kids to grow up in the countryside. Steve used to work for a publisher and now freelances, and Agnieszka is a business psychologist and a career coach who works remotely and travels into London once a week. They are always on hand to help, whether for practicalities or recommendations – ask about yoga, kickboxing in their studio or even a career coaching session.
