The Experience

This part of Suffolk is dotted with charming villages seemingly lost in time, and Chelsworth is perhaps one of the loveliest. A cluster of timbered and thatched cottages lead to the ancient church and the river Brett and everywhere green, bucolic fields radiate out. Picnic by the river; borrow the rowing boat: there are kingfishers and otters to spot.

The annexe is separated from the main timber-framed house by ancient thick walls and you get your own private entrance and outside space. Inside it is warm and inviting: the neat open-plan kitchen means you can cook and chat; the bedrooms have wonky wooden beams and delicious views over meadows teeming with flora and fauna. Sarah leaves you honey from her hives and eggs.

It’s five miles to pretty Lavenham and around each corner are more gorgeous medieval villages. The village pub serves good food, The Swan in Lavenham is excellent, the bright lights of Bury are a half hour drive.

Reviews

The building maintains all the feel of a medieval house, with no traffic noise to spoil the atmosphere. Most special is that heavily beamed bedroom, with a creaking floorboard, original wooden panelling and wall hangings. Beyond the window, a formal garden. It would be wasted on anybody who didn't insist on going to bed with a candle (though you may have to bring your own).

A really special place to stay in a beautiful part of Suffolk. The Old Pottery is very comfortable and thought and care has gone in to providing very helpful information on the place itself, the village and the many varied places to visit. The nearby farm shop makes self catering a pleasure. We enjoyed walks in the local meadows, walks in Constable country, Sutton Hoo, the coast and the newly extended Gainsborough museum/gallery in Sudbury as well as breakfasting in a little sunny courtyard with the butterflies. All in a relaxing four night stay.

This place was absolutely amazing. Sarah has done a fabulous job of taking care of this old, wonderful home. Our stay was comfortable and relaxing each day. The Peacock, 5 min walk from the Old Pottery delivered excellent meals both times we ate there and the service was fantastic. The walks in the surrounding countryside were absolutely idyllic. Sarah was warm, welcoming and so attentive to our requests. I only wish we could have brought our dog, but even so I would recommend to family and friends and absolutely stay there again. Thank you Sarah.

The perfect property for our five-night relaxing break in such a gorgeous part of Suffolk. The house is lovely and cannot be faulted. Wonderfully comfortable, super cozy, perfectly furnished/equipped and just so darned beautiful. Sarah and Marmite were great hosts, the welcome pack was really appreciated ... and the nearby Peacock Inn was an added bonus to an already perfect stay. We really couldn't have asked for more during our much needed break from the humdrum of everyday life, and will definitely be returning.

Lis, Norwich

We spent a restful week at The Old Pottery. The property is fascinating, very quiet and private. Sarah is very helpful and told us all about the local area. There is lots to do and we were out every day, as well as enjoying a superb meal at the village pub. All of this was upstaged by Marmite the friendliest cat we have ever met!

Location

The neighbourhood

The Peacock in the village is well-known locally and draws crowds for its food. Lavenham, five miles, is bigger and has a selection of chi-chi boutiques, galleries and places to eat - The Swan and The Great House are both excellent. It's considered Britain’s best preserved medieval town and has over 300 listed buildings and it is often used for film productions. The coast is an hour's drive.

Local points of interest from Chris & Sarah Cullen

  • The Old Pottery is part of a beautiful, historic, 15th century, Grade 2* listed merchants house set in several acres of river meadowland. An ancient church nestles within the grounds. Peaceful and tranquil. A unique place to stay.
  • The unspoiled village of Chelsworth is one of the prettiest in Suffolk with lovely thatched, painted cottages and the meandering River Brett teeming with wildlife. Enjoy fishing or take the boat for a paddle. Look out for kingfishers, otters & watervoles
  • Our local pub, The Peacock, is 50 yards away. You can enjoy local ales and good food in front of a warm log fire or in the pretty walled garden.
  • The unspoiled medieval wool village of Lavenham is just 5 minutes drive away. Timber framed buildings line the streets and market place. Enjoy visiting the magnificent church, galleries, shops and wonky tea houses.
  • Our award-winning farm shop, Hollow Trees, is 3 minutes drive away and sells fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, local cheeses, cakes, wines, beers and washing powder! We also have 2 very well stocked community shops, each a mile away.
  • We provide you with a delicious welcome pack of local produce including tea, coffee, milk, butter, eggs, bread and orange juice. We also have a travel cot and high chair for guests to use.

Introducing

Chris & Sarah Cullen

Sarah and Chris lived in the village for years but needed more space as their children got older. When The Grange came up for sale they bought it and the almost derelict Old Pottery. They oversaw a sympathetic, meticulous renovation for guests to enjoy. They are next door should you need them but it feels very private and peaceful here.
