Broad Reach

On a windy day you can see the waves pile into the bay and shake the boats on their moorings. It’s a beautiful spot, and the cottage is in a lofty position over it all; views reach across one of the loveliest coastlines in Britain. Like so many new Scottish houses, its exterior is simple, but inside is awash with light and luxury, fitted with every aid to contemporary living, books, art and wood-burner too. It is the very modern opposite of an old and well-worn Scottish baronial building, or even a croft: crisp, wood-floored and leather-sofa’d. There is space galore, and the bedrooms, one up, one down, are sybaritically comfortable: sparkling lights, the finest bedding, sheepskins from the owner’s craft centre. Given the strength of the winds up here, it is satisfying to know that the house is built to the highest eco standards, with triple-glazed windows and heat recovery. It is not far from Uig, the ferry port for the Outer Isles, and the islands within range are richly rewarding. Skye too is heavy with history and ineffable beauty – but you may well not want to budge from this glorious spot.
