The Experience
Follow narrow green lanes to a lush valley, where this whitewashed cottage stands near a handsome bridge over the river. The lane is now a sleepy back road, so it’s a restful spot; the river flows by gently in summer, more vigorously in winter.Romantics can stay snug here by the oil-burning stove in the living room, climb a stepladder to the loft space with a book, or walk through woods to a quiet beach. Families will love the higgledy-piggledy garden, perfect for hide and seek, and beautiful sandy beaches ten minutes away by car.For eating out you have a choice of small villages – head for Llangrannog, just over three miles away, to eat fish and chips on the beach in summer, or settle in to the Pentre Arms for good pub food. There’s good surfing from the beach here too.

With frosty mornings and a dusting of snow, we couldn’t have asked for a more magical stay. The cottage was warm and inviting, a perfect size two. We enjoyed walks and drives to the nearby beaches and hot toddies by the fire pit. Gemma and James were very accommodating and responsive when we got a little iced in. Highly recommend a stay at this picturesque thatched beauty.

We had a wonderful stay at Glan yr afon in Penbontrhydyfothau, Ceredigion. The cottage is extremely clean and very comfortable. The garden is lovely and has lots of places to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet. A very special place.

Lovely Thatched Cottage in its own little forest valley with stream in Garden next to quiet country lane. Beautiful garden with carefully placed seats to enjoy garden, wildlife and bird song (at eight time of year). The hosts are really amenable and helpful with a lovely welcoming package. Cottage has decent size bathroom, bedroom and living space with large kitchen dining area including modern utilities. There is an easy forest walk to small cove or longer walk into Llangrannog. Worth a visit for breakfast, lunch or dinner and beach. Also recommend New Quay as this has lovely beach and vibe

Location
The neighbourhood
The cottage is one of a few houses in a scattered hamlet a mile or so from the coast. A 35-minute walk leads to the nearest beach and onto some spectacular sections of the Ceredigion Coast Path. You might spot seals and dolphins from the shoreline, and you can swim or surf from unspoilt sandy beaches at Cymtydu or Llangrannog. Good eating places include pubs, cafés and fine dining at The Harbourmaster in Aberaeron.
Local points of interest from Gemma & James Wiseman
- Glan yr afon is located just a short walk (via ancient forest) from one of the best sections of the stunningly beautiful Ceredigion Coast Path. Or, cross the path and 10 minutes later you are at Cwmtydu beach (NT). Bring stout boots whatever the weather!
- Relax in Llangrannog - Great for sunbathing on the beach, bodyboarding, amazing gelato and a couple of great eateries. Our favourite area is the 'secret' beach (Cilborth), accessible at low tide or a short walk over the top of the cliff on the coast path!
- Watch the dolphins from New Quay harbour (with its Dylan Thomas connections) - Take a boat trip, or (our tip) they can often be seen from late afternoon from the harbour wall. We've seen dolphins & porpoises from most of the nearby beaches too!
- Get active! Sea-kayaking, paddle-boarding, river canoeing, coasteering and many other fun/adrenalin-pumping activities are available nearby - Or book for a couple of hours sea fishing from New Quay. A great way to see the coast!
- The colourful Regency houses surrounding the harbour and some lovely places to eat (Harbour Master is just one) make Aberaeron a fantastic place to spend time. Grab a drink and watch the sun set from the harbour wall. Great crabbing for the children too!
- Simply relax at the cottage! There's always something to see in the garden (red kites often circle overhead). The garden has lots of 'nooks and crannies' to read & relax in. On a wintery day the cottage is cosy & warm so curl up with a book or sketchbook.

Introducing
Gemma & James Wiseman
James and Gemma found the cottage while staying with friends nearby, and have since restored it with loving attention to detail as well as James' architectural expertise. It has involved new wiring, plumbing and heating, and the use of traditional materials to keep the spirit of the original building alive. They are delighted that guests will stay and add to Glan yr afon's long history.
We stayed in Glan yr afon, near Cardigan, for our honeymoon. The cottage was wonderful and so pretty, it was beautifully furnished with wooden beams, other period features and absolutely everything we needed. It stands in a gorgeous garden, even in February we were able to sit on one or other of the many benches and enjoy the birdsong and sound of the river which runs through the garden. It was a perfect location for a honeymoon and we will definitely go again. Ps. The welcome pack was very generous and also Gemma had left a lovely card for us.
