The Experience

Set off on a wind-buffeted hike along the coastal path from nearby Whitesands Bay and see the dramatic rocks and reefs which still pose a threat to boats passing through these tidal races.

You stay in a fresh little cottage in the heart of St Davids. It’s just right for a couple with its low-beamed sitting room, a big kitchen with a Rayburn and a wood-burning stove for cosy nights in.

Hop on a ferry to Ramsey Island from three miles down the road, walk a lazy mile to explore caves and rock pools at Caerfai Bay; surfers will head for Whitesands Bay just below. Return to a sundowner with cathedral views from the garden while something sizzles on the barbecue.

Reviews

Sarah, Sheffield

This was the most amazing place to stay, beautifully furnished and kept, warm and snug with a Rayburn on all the time as well as heating and fire, and just everything possible that we could have wanted. It is perfectly situated, in a peaceful courtyard off a road very central to the town, just minutes walk from pubs and restaurants, five minutes walk from the cathedral, close to bus stops to the coast - yet quiet and tranquil. Arrival and departure was easy, with Welsh cakes on arrival and none of the usual list of things-to-do on departure. We loved it!

Laura, Hereford

Bwthyn Gwe was the best cottage I have ever stayed in. It had everything I could possibly need to make my stay comfortable and relaxing. It was immaculately clean and well equipped. The design and styling was perfect. All the fixtures/fittings and appliances were of a high standard and good quality. The welcome on arrival by Dawn was lovely and she was really helpful if I needed anything during my stay. The freshly baked welsh cakes she had made were a lovely addition. The cottage was perfect in every way and I am very much looking forward to a return visit. Thank you Hamish, Linda & Dawn :)

Geoffrey, Hartley Wintney, Hook

Our recent holiday at Ty Gwilym was a delightful experience. We stayed in Bwthyn Gwe which is quite perfect self-catering accommodation. On arrival we were immediately impressed by the high standard of the fittings and furnishings and by the immaculate cleanliness throughout. Whoever designed the accommodation had a clear idea of what is needed by holiday makers and has successfully provided it without any compromises. The cottage was warm and the thick stone walls shut out any ambient noise so we slept very soundly every night. We were reluctant to say goodbye to Bwthyn Gwe.

John, Sittingbourne

Our stay at Bwthyn Gwe was wonderful. The cottage was pristine and well equipped. We hadn't used a Rayburn cooker before but help was on hand within minutes and we were able to have some vey nice meals. The cottage is handily situated to take advantage of what St Davids has to offer, close enough to enjoy some good walking and plenty to do within a short drive. Excellent all round

Jas, Cardiff

We stated in the cottage for a week and we could not fault booking, communication and the cottage itself. Hamish was a great host and he kept us informed prior to our visit and on the day. The cottage is on the main road but is set back and is quiet, so you can sit in the garden, and can easily access the shops and pubs. There is parking allocated to the cottage which was really helpful. The cottage is well equipped and we were able to cook a couple of times in the week. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I would recommend the cottage for anyone who wants to visit the local area.

Location

The neighbourhood

The cottages are a minute’s walk from the centre of a city that is charmingly small and unashamedly old-fashioned. Discover craft shops, food shops, restaurants and pubs, including the Farmer's Arms on the same street. The 12th-century cathedral, the finest in Wales, hides down a hill, and wonderful beaches abound – Whitesands, Caerfai, Abereiddi. Coastal walks are a ten-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Hamish Elvidge

  • Whitesand Bay is a wonderful sandy beach within five minutes drive and is great for surfing and sandcastles!
  • St Davids Cathedral is the focal point of the city and must be visited!
  • Great restaurants (for example Morgans and Cwtch) are plentiful in St Davids and the surrounding area.
  • A trip around Ramsey Island cannot be missed, to see the seals and, hopefully dolphins!
  • Abereiddi and the Blue Lagoon create a very unique atmosphere.
  • Pothgain is a unique, beautiful harbour, which has a really good restaurant (The Shed) and pub (The Sloop)

Introducing

Hamish Elvidge

The owners are Linda and Hamish Elvidge, and Dawn Hughes is the meeter and greeter. A native of St Davids, she is friendly and informative, and fiercely proud of the three cottages she cleans and the garden she so meticulously tends.
