The Experience

This handsome manoir in big peaceful gardens has been lovingly restored by Claude, who speaks six languages, and equally well-travelled Agnès; both are charming and friendly – to you and your dog. Theirs is a fascinating house built in 1714 with French windows opening to a south-facing terrace and a salon lined with oak panelling; relax by the blazing fire.

Bedrooms, comfortable, traditional and upstairs, are dominated by dark ships’ timbers; the port of St Malo is close, so are golden sand beaches – perfect for woofy walks. Breakfast is served beneath the chandelier – delicious, generous and imaginative in front of the fire in winter.

Wander through the mini-park surrounding you, visit the permanent art exhibition and find lots of quiet places to sit peacefully with a book, or hop on a bike and head to St Malo – about 25 minutes of (mostly flat) pedalling.

Reviews

The great front door swung open to reveal a colourfully dressed Agnès with a beaming smile. It was the sort of heart-warming welcome I have come to expect from Sawday hosts. The magic was felt immediately, reinforced by tea and cake at a wrought-iron table on the gravelled space between the house and the mini-parkland beyond.

This is a truly exceptional place to stay with the most welcoming hostess, Agnes. Our room was spacious and clean with a modern wetroom - we had everything we needed. The breakfast is fantastic and you get to eat with the owners. The history of the house is fascinating, make sure to ask Agnes to tell you all about it. The garden is superb too. We only stayed for two nights exploring the region, but could have easily stayed longer. Added bonus - our dog was most welcome.

Christopher, Isle of Wight

This is an extraordinary house, made largely of huge beams and very interesting history. Agnes is American and Claude a retired French businessman. Interesting conversations and all enlivened by the presence of three young grandchildren. Very comfortable room and a lavish breakfast. Again, a most enjoyable experience. I would add that the house is in the middle of nowhere so a good Satnav or basic directions are essential.

Fabulous. One of our most wonderful.holidays! It had everything, beauty, comfort, peaceful and relaxing yet entertaining, hospitality and rural setting. Claude and Agnes extend their home into a charming B&B. Our family still talk about the delicious breakfasts. Our son played in the garden and on the grand piano. The location enables swimming in local beauty spots, cycling, aquarium, visits to Dinan, Dinard, and Mont St Michel, all wonderful and a drive away. And there was so much still to do, we stayed a week and loved it. Highly recommend it and many thanks to Agnes and Claude.

Alaric and Rosemary, Near Domfront, France

I booked two nights to celebrate my husband's birthday and couldn't have made a better choice. The owners Agnes and Claude were very welcoming, interesting and really fun people. The chateau is absolutely amazing. Our bedroom was very comfortable with a modern ensuite and all in all it was a wonderful weekend. The breakfast was delicious, fresh croissants, Danish pastries. Fresh orange juice. Eggs and bacon and much more. We can't wait to return.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're deep in the countryside here but just 10-minutes by car from St Malo for shopping, a good choice of restaurants and the sea. It's walled and charming and there's a beautiful 18th-century cathedral to explore. Mont St Michel is nearby - a UNESCO heritage site - and well worth the climb to the top of the Abbey for long views. Dinard and Dinan are a must to visit - an easy day out.

Local points of interest from Agnès & Claude François

  • Saint Malo - only 10 minutes away - enjoy fabulous food & shopping & a breathtaking view of the sea! A beautiful 18th century cathedral can be reached via winding streets twisting this way & that - wandering around this enchanting walled city is a must!
  • Dinard - only 15 minutes away - was THE fashionable hideout favoured by English gentry in the 1900's. After you've enjoyed imagining what living in some of the exquisite homes would be like, step into any one of many restaurants for a fabulous meal.
  • Dinan is only a bit further afield. Founded almost a THOUSAND years ago it features an amazing mix of ancient, old & up to date. Walk the cobblestone streets, admire century old buildings. For images of this medieval city look at the video on our site.
  • In every direction, there are many activities you can choose from - exceptional bike trails, walking paths, golf courses, ancient monuments, great shopping, unforgettable food. We've lived here for years & will enjoy helping you plan a memorable visit.
  • Mont St Michel "Wonder of the Western World" is very close by. See why UNESCO classes this tiny island as a World Heritage Site, climb up to the glorious Abbey & look out over the shifting sands & rolling sea. Watch out for St Michel in the stairway...
  • Most of our home was built in 1710 by Guillaume des Trauchandieres but part of it is even older. Built in the 16th century for Jacques Cartier's sister, it's now our gite! Find out more by watching this video: https://youtu.be/cFBqQnbMYrY
