The Experience

The terraced garden is brimful of stepping stones and flowers, roses ramble, and bucolic views stretch across undulating pastures: this is a deeply rural ensemble. June, widely travelled, kind, attentive, a great reader and lover of art in all its forms, lives in a long stone farmhouse in a cluster of outbuildings that go back to 1740.

Up the stone steps to a charmingly old-fashioned two-bedroom suite in its own wing with interesting art, comfy sofas, bookshelves and a perfectly adequate kitchen area. The double bedroom is on a mezzanine level and has steps down to a second, smaller bedroom, then the bathroom with a proper bath.

June’s breakfasts are a real treat – full of local produce and very relaxed. She’ll also cook you traditional French dinners with a bit of notice, using vegetables and fruits from her garden along with fine regional fare – especially Charolais beef. Come to escape the banal and revel in a bit of soul.

We think you'll love

You should know

  • It's not the ideal choice for anybody with limited mobility – there are outdoor and indoor steps
  • The beautiful old stone fireplace in the living room isn't for lighting at the moment – a wood-burner is planned, but this is more of a summer place
  • Parking is easy against the house – don't carry on up the lane or you'll have to reverse down again

Reviews

June is an absolute delight, the sort of person you instantly take a shine to and want to engage in conversation. Her enthusiasm is infectious, as is her love of France and gardening and travelling. She fell in love with La Tour 25 years ago, slowly renovated it and brought it back to life to share with like-minded people. Bravo.

Catherine, Hertfordshire

We stayed with June and her beautiful cats for a one-night stay. We loved every minute. Not only was the accommodation wonderfully unique, clean and comfortable, we had a beautiful dinner with June in the evening, a delicious meal. What we loved was spending time with June. This is a place to go if you like interesting conversation, remote and rural landscapes and of course the cats. We will definitely stay again.

Arriving at 8.30pm after a night sitting up on a ferry and a day driving 650 miles, the warmth of the welcome and the delicious meal revived us completely...June could not have been a kinder hostess during our 36 hour stay, taking great trouble with our every request. She was also excellent, entertaining and interesting company. La Tour is set in beautiful countryside and like its owner, has charm and personality. Highly recommended on lots of different levels....

The delightful June Bibby at La Tour. Could do with more directions - took some finding - but as you say, lovely dinner, breakfast and company.

Sue, London

A really special place with a delightful host. Don't miss a visit to La Poste in Charrolles - and just go with the flow. That Michelin star is well-deserved.

Location

The neighbourhood

Charolles is just 7km and has plenty of bars and shops, a food market on Wednesdays and a Michelin-starred restaurant. For history lovers the area is rich in small Romanesque churches and Paray-le-Monial, 15km away, has the finest remaining example of Cluniac architecture. Visit châteaux, enjoy wine tastings, discover some charming villages or head to Lyon (90 minutes) on a small local train.

Introducing

June Bibby

It is June, a veritable polymath, who makes this place special. Born in Quebec, schooled in Chelsea, attended McGill University in Montreal, horticultural college in Sydney and ran a restaurant in the Caribbean – she is now settled here. Her first degree was in philosophy, her second in horticulture – if you revel in interesting conversation then come and be charmed here.
