The Experience

As you progress down the track you wonder, for a moment, where you are going. Then the gates appear, and the Moulin stands alone, silent and splendid in the curve of the river. Smiling Babette, who runs her own B&B, comes out to greet you and shows you around. What a restoration! The fine proportions of the rooms have been respected and the very best materials have been used. Two apartments combine: one on the ground floor with a large terrace overlooking the river (relax to the wind rustling in the bamboo) and the other up the wide stone stair. You can cook your own meals in the sociable kitchen or have them brought to you by a local chef (one of six à la carte extras). Downstairs, ceilings are high and fine linen curtains swoosh to the floor; upstairs, two bedrooms are on mezzanines with beams to watch and steep stairs. Spend the morning in medieval Pézenas up the hill, long loved for its architecture, boutiques and winding streets. Return to the dappled shade of the majestic plane that guards the bridge to the door; let the children swim and explore. Magical.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Pierres d’Histoire

  • Michelin guide ‘Les Plus Beaux Détours de France’ states Pezenas as a ‘not to miss’ town. Year round there are sights to see markets to visit and cafes to rest awhile !
  • The Languedoc area of France is nature at its best offering a diverse and incomparable variety of scenry from the flat salt marches of the Camargue in the east to the snow capped Pyrenees in the south.
  • Discover the wild and barren Causses-Cevenne with its neolithic rock formations alternatively the sunny Mediterranean coast is less than 30 minutes drive.
  • The whole region is dominated by vineyards, known as the largest vineyard in the world. A drive around the countryside will unearth dozens upon dozens of small independent wineries open for ‘degustation’.

Introducing

Pierres d’Histoire

Picture the wilds of Scotland and a beautifully-restored Landmark Trust house surrounded by wild moors and hardy sheep. It was while staying here that the seed of the idea for Pierres d’Histoire was sown for its founder, Dominique Imbert. Passionate about the preservation of ancient heritage, he restores or re-builds abandoned historical houses in France, not only breathing new life into them but making them comfortable holiday homes.
