The Experience

Come to Paradix if you’re seeking a week of minimalist perfection in discreet surroundings, and a village centre you can walk to: Nissan is a lively little place with bars, market and shops. The handsome gateway is 19th-century but the interiors are resolutely modern: old and new coexist effortlessly in four spacious apartments. Study or relax in large, light sitting/dining rooms, where striking blues, reds and yellows in natural fabrics are offset by light woods and white walls: a restoration from old stables and outbuildings by architect Colin and his wife Susanna. Kitchens are immaculate with every mod con, and the bedrooms are stylishly simple. Lighting is excellent, beds are dressed in crisp linen, and central heating keeps you toasty in winter. In summer, swim in the delicious pool, read under the plane trees, sniff the jasmine, stroll among the roses and oleander, or take a drink to a private patio. Set off for Béziers, the lovely tree-lined Canal du Midi or the Oppidium d’Ensérune, the nearby site of a a Gallo-Roman settlement.

Reviews

Carol, Brighton

One of the best places our family has ever stayed. Perfect - clean, stylish, characterful, well-equipped, beautiful crystal-clear pool, aromatic and lovely gardens, friendly, knowledgeable owners. They are former architects who have tastefully restored this former vintner's complex, creating a mix of classic period France and Corbusier. The apartments are a few minutes walk from the village, with market, bakeries and small shops. Bigger amenities and great eateries within short drive. Beautiful hills, historic sites, Canal du Midi (walking, cycling) walking distance. Coast, Bezier etc nearby.

Local points of interest from Susanna Glennie

  • Only minutes away from the exceptional archeological site of the Oppidum d'Enserune, with a stunning panorama, and the Via Domitia, once connecting Rome & Spain. It is also where the Canal du Midi runs through the Tunnel de Malpas.
  • Wander round fascinating old centre of Béziers, 10 min away with its cathedral and fine covered market. Flower markets are on Fridays, a farmers market on Wednesdays & Saturdays. So make the most of the fabulous kitchen in your apartment!
  • Narbonne, another cathedral city is only 30 minutes away, & a little further reach the Mediteranean coast to delight in the fresh sea food & the long sandy beaches.
  • Within an hour, drive into the Corbières to taste the rich & wonderful wines & discover the numerous historical sites such as the Abbaye of Fontfroide. Founded in the X1C by Bénédictine monks & now also famous for its gardens, museum & art gallery.
  • The village of Minerve, gateway to the ‘Parc Régional du Haut-Languedoc’, steeped in Cathar history & set in the garrigue above rocky canyons. Wonderful walks abound, restaurants too.
  • Not far from Narbonne, the Abbey of Fontfroide is one of the most complete abbey complexes remaining today. Dine out at its impressive restaurant.
