The Experience

The château is built on the ruins of an ancient citadel, partially demolished in 1420, beloved by Turner who once painted this view of the Loire – history lovers can learn all about its connection to the Duke of Brittany. You have use of a very elegant drawing room with wonderful views over the river and classic French continental breakfast is served each morning: fresh pastries, breads, jams and fruits.

Upstairs bedrooms are large and simply furnished with views over the park or river and both have en suite shower rooms. Wander outdoors for pure romance – stone balustrades on huge terraces, mature Italian pines and huge views which plunge to the river below. This land hasn’t been touched in decades so it hums with birds and insects.

Visit the ruins in the grounds with the owners to find out its full history and why it was strategically so important, have long walks along the riverbank, revel in nature and peace.

Reviews

This beautiful château, with its simply incredible views, was built upon the remains of a huge ancient fortress and it's incredibly exciting to chat about it with the lovely owners, and see the maps and drawings they have. Equally exciting is that fact that this, arguably most beautiful, stretch of the Loire, was loved and painted by Turner during his Grand Tour of France. Art and history lovers will simply adore staying at this wonderful B&B.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're sitting on a gorge, where the Loire has to push through one narrow passage before it finally makes its way to the Atlantic. Nantes has a rich history, museums, shops and restaurants – often voted the best city in France. Visit the Italianate village of Clisson, or head for Noirmoutier, just under two hours, for a stunning beach with striped beach huts in front of a forest of Holm oaks.

Local points of interest from Hervé Tribot La Spiere

  • The castle is located in the middle of a medieval archeological park. The ruins of the medieval city can be visited under Herve’s historical guidance by arrangement.
  • The surroundings of the castle, and particularly the Loire river, has been constantly painted or drawn by hundreds of artists, among which William Turner in 1826...When arriving at La Colinière - ask Christine to show you the art book she published.
  • Depending on the season, you will spot or hear an array of animals in the park during the day and night : Eurasian nuthatch, squirrels, titmouses, deers, tawny owls, etc...
  • With the beautiful days coming, delight yourself by taking a boat trip on the Loire river at the foot of La Colinière castle...
  • So many beautiful castles to visit around La Colinière (just under an hour): Angers, Nantes, Clisson, Serrant, Le Plesis Bourré, Brissac...
