The Experience

Sheep graze behind this old bergerie in the grounds of your hosts’ manor house. Cook al fresco in a rustic, open kitchen on the covered terrace; enjoy breakfast, dinner or sharing platters here overlooking the beautiful garden with its huge linden trees – a very special treat.

The suite is light, lofty and beamed; the little Bergère will bring you close to nature – leave the top part of the stable door open and watch the stars come out one by one. On chilly days light the wood-burning stove and plan your next adventures.

Stroll through the garden and orchard to find bee hives, chicken and sheep. Hike through gentle, rolling countryside with munching cows and donkeys. Hop in the car for farmers’ markets, superb old churches and a magnificent beach at Trouville.

Reviews

Charlotte, Milton Keynes

Quite the loveliest Sawday place we have ever stayed in! Truly magical, we felt we had landed in paradise and cannot wait to return. Hetty and Rud were so kind and thoughtful to us all as we fell dripping onto their driveway after a long hot car journey. They accepted two tinies of 1 and 3 without question and were so sweet to them. Nothing was too much trouble and the attention to detail in the accommodation is second to none. Delicious evening meal and breakfast .....I can't say more in case they get so booked up we cannot return!

Deborah, Castelmoron sur lot

This place is amazing, the calm tranquility of the location, the kind welcoming charm of Hetty and Ruud, the quality of the furnishinga and the attention to detail of ... Well ... Of everything really. We stayed for two delightfully restfull days and made sure we reserved another week later in the year. In a nutshell fantastic!

Alison, London

A truly magical place with wonderful hospitality. This is our second visit and can't wait for the next. Hettie and Rud are the perfect host and hostess to make for a wonderful stay. Cannot recommend highly enough

Emma, Fordingbridge

I have visited twice now - and this is a slice of heaven: utterly peaceful and magical - all made possible by the two most delightful hosts, Hetty and Rud. It is a place built with love, and I feel restored when I have stayed. I shall keep coming back, come wind or shine. Every detail is thought of, and to breakfast in one's outside dining room is simply a joy. I can recommend Hetty's cooking in the evening - especially the "French chicken" - otherwise known as duck - but it fools perhaps picky children! I know, if you come and stay here, you will want to come back - as I shall!

Megan, Stuttgart

Our family (2 adults, 7yo son, and golden retriever) stayed in the Bergerie. I cannot say enough positive things about Hetty and Ruud and their property - it was incredibly peaceful and bucolic, the breakfasts were wonderful in the outdoor kitchen, and both "kids" were spoiled by Hetty and Ruud and loved having plenty of room to run around and play. We have compared every stay since with this one and none have measured up. We miss it everyday and cannot wait to return! Thank you, Hetty & Ruud!

Location

The neighbourhood

It's very rural here so the walking is easy with plenty of animals to spot and birds to watch. Just a short drive away is a nice village called Cormeilles which has very good restaurants and a lively market on Friday mornings. In the summer there are farmers' markets on Sundays with music and dancing.

Local points of interest from Rudolf Walthaus

  • Trouville with a wonderful sandy beach, where you can eat the freshest seafood you've ever tasted. Deauville with every morning a lively market or visit the Hippodrome for a horse race or a polo match.
  • If you like castles, you'll love Château du Champ de Bataile, 17th century. Magnificent gardens with fountains and topiaries. Have a high tea there. Combine this with the Harcourt Castle and Arboretum. The picturesque Benedictine Abbey in Le Bec-Hellouin.
  • A picturesque harbor, a maze of leafy, cobbled streets and authentic timber-framed houses. Around kunchtime; head to the Vieux Bassin and visit the iconic Église Sainte-Catherine. Easy to see why the Impressionists fell in love with Honfleur.
  • There are many must see locations in Normandy, such as the landing beaches at Arromanches and Omaha. The Memorial in Caen and the Bayeux tapestry is also well worth a visit. The Bergerie is only 10 minutes from a beautiful Zoo.
  • Visit Giverny with the house and gardens of Monet. Such a lovely place! Rouen, less then one hour from the Bergerie. The town of Jeanne d'Arc and the restored Cathédrale de Nôtre-Dame which is one of the best known cathédrales in France.
  • From the Bergerie to the Eiffel Tower is only 160km... or relax and unwind on the wooden sun beds in the garden of the Bergerie. We want to ensure you have a wonderful time with us, so please contact us with any questions you may have.

Introducing

Rudolf Walthaus

Rudolf and Hetty bought this place, along with nearly three hectares, as a family holiday home many years ago. They restored the house meticulously and created the wonderful garden from scratch, then decided to live here permanently. They have never regretted it and love sharing their little slice of rural bliss with guests.
