The Experience
This is a lovely place to stay and there’s oodles of room, so even if all four rooms are booked you’ll find private spaces to roost. Take a book to the comfortable, welcoming sitting room, head for the cinema room, play billiards or table football, find lots of books and board games if the weather isn’t playing. Outside you’ll find a big grassy garden with a terrain pétanque, a spa area and a super-long swimming pool for lazy, hazy days.
Four sumptuous bedrooms are distinctive – one with a massive picture window, another with its own enclosed garden, one for families with a roof terrace – but each are wonderful, colourful spaces in which to spend time. Philippe is a professional chef, so food is taken seriously at breakfast, lunch (if you want it) and dinner – local food, cooked superbly and accompanied by local, natural wines.
There’s a deliciously unfussy, amiable vibe here, with visits to local vineyards, walks and cycles.

Location
The neighbourhood
The house is charmingly remote, surrounded by fields and woodland as far as the eye can see. Villebois-Lavalette, eight minutes by car, has a château, an ancient covered market and a good selection of shops, cafés and bistros. Angoulême is a 25-minute drive and has a very fast train service to Paris. Day trips could include Cognac, Bordeaux or the coast at Royan.
Introducing
Micky & Philippe Damas
Micky (an actor) and Philippe (a Parisian chef) are the perfect team to welcome you to the gorgeous home they've lovingly created. They spent many years looking for the ideal spot until they stumbled upon L'Abri des Mésanges and fell in love with the house and the area. They look after guests with aplomb, feed you beautifully and are happy to collect you from Angoulême if you come without a car.
