The Experience

Cross Monfort’s exquisite stone bridge to this pretty house on the banks of the river. Enter the grounds and forget the world in heavenly peace among very old trees. Gentle Madame saved it all from ruin and gives you two comfortable rooms upstairs, privately off the courtyard, both with fine armoires. The suite in the old stables (salon below, bedrooms above) has a charming late 18th-century feel. There are delicious jams at the big table for breakfast and a family salon for guests. You can visit the lovely, unsung villages and vineyards of the Sarthe. For children? Forest animals at Pescheray and an aquapark in the village.

Chantal gave us a lovely welcome to her amazing house – an old mansion she has rescued. It’s large, rambling and a work in progress. Our room was lovely – a good size overlooking eponymous bridge with a well appointed shower room. The bed was nice and firm and made with genuine thick linen – gorgeous! We had an excellent dinner in a grand dining room - carrot soufflé and cod stuffed with soft cheese and chocolate mousse. Breakfast next day was fresh baguettes and fab butter from farm up road, quince jelly – must be her own – and miel from little old man. All for 112Euro – a steal.

Our 3rd visit and it only gets better. Beautiful room and wonderful meal enjoyed with German couple who couldn't speak highly enough of their previous visits. Will definitely be back

The initial part of our journey was very stressful for several reasons, so it was particularly relaxing to have a change of pace as soon as we stepped into the Maison du Pont Romain. Madame is a marvellous cook; four courses (with much of the produce coming from the garden), together with a delicious bottle of wine put everything to rights. Lovely room with views over the river. We were driving down to Bordeaux and it was a perfect half way spot.

We made an overnight stop here in the middle of a heatwave on the way to Brittany. Arriving exhausted from the heat, we discovered a charming village, a beautiful old house full of character and a huge garden, more of a park, where we were made welcome by Chantal's mother, busy gardening. The room was large and airy, overlooking the river. We were made very welcome and given a delicious meal, specially prepared for coeliacs (no gluten), with a home-made gluten free fruit tart! This was very much appreciated. A good breakfast sent us on our way in the morning. Highly recommended.

excellent, Madame was very welcoming and produce a beautiful 4 course dinner, probably the best we have had in a Sawday to date, and delightful breakfast with home made jams. Highly recommended.
