The Experience
Step onto your terrace and you’ll catch your breath. Views shimmer down to Lake Orta twinkling bewitchingly below; it looks even better from the infinity-edge swimming pool perched above your (almost) personal vineyard. The surroundings – private garden or terrace, BBQ and playground (both tucked discreetly away), shady trees and lavender-bordered pathways – of these hillside apartments mean you have to drag yourself away to explore local hikes, cycle rides, lakeside walks and pretty Orta. Built of local stone and timber on the site of a hamlet – romantic tower apartment remains – the low-rise buildings combine rustic simplicity with cool modernity, and a green footprint. The owners are passionate designers. Rooms are cool in whites and soft naturals, splashed with fun-coloured chairs. Sharply contemporary furnishings might include zinc-topped tables and heart-shaped mirrors. Kitchen areas gleam with chrome and tip-top equipment. Choose first-floor for open rafters; ground floor for pretty gardens. Evening aperitivi, on-hand local knowledge, 15-minute stroll to the village, rural peace – you’ll want for nothing.

La Darbia is a beautiful place . Accommodation is superb and immaculately clean , everything is in the accommodation that you need . We would definitely return . Angela who runs the place is lovely and so helpful. We didn't take a car but had a very good taxi company that we used to get around and if your up for walking it takes about 25minutes to lake Orta ,their is a small shop about 10 min walk from la Darbia which has a good selection of groceries .

As soon as we saw La Darbia on the Sawdays website, we booked our whole trip around visiting them. It is utterly gorgeous. Beautiful accommodation, the most wonderful views, lovely hosts and a great part of the world to explore. I can't speak highly enough of La Darbia.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Matteo Primatesta
- La Darbia overlooks Lake Orta, Italy’s most romantic lake: it’s the perfect place for a romantic weekend or to celebrate a special occasion away from the chaos of everyday life, surrounded by a stunning landscape. On the horizon: the impressing Mount Rosa!
- La Darbia is a perfect base for discovering the rich territory: one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, the village of Orta is within walking distance, with the splendid Isola San Giulio and the Sacro Monte di Varallo, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- We produce our own wine made with Nebbiolo grapes and grown in our vineyards; guests are most welcome to harvest with us! The most renowned wine cellars made from Nebbiolo grapes in North Piedmont are all within a 30km radius.
- La Darbia truly is a home away from home: It unfolds its charm quietly and makes you feel at ease, thanks to the people who shape this place and who enable the relaxed coexistence of different guest constellations and holiday needs. Welcome!
- Those who love walking, mountains and bike rides will be spoilt for choice – we prepare a personalised map for each of our guests with trails and paths to help discover the territory. Design lovers will be happy to visit Alessi and other iconic producers.
- la DARBIA is the idea place to discover a piece of real Italy off the beaten track. Meet genuine people, visit local shops, street markets, and wine bars in this authentic, unspoilt corner of Bella Italia like here on lake Orta. New: Yoga & massage spaces!

La Darbia is a very special place to stay. The fabulous apartments, pool and gardens, the spectacular location and the wonderful people who own and look after you at La Darbia make for an incredible combination. There is luxury in lots of places in the world, but to find it where it has real heart is truly special. Perched on the hill above Lake Orta, the views across the lake are stunning. Perfectly functional as well as beautiful (we find it rare to achieve both!), our 2 bedroom garden apartment was superb for our family of 4 and the local area offered lots to enjoy. A wonderful week!
