The Experience
Twist and turn through the mazy streets of blindingly white houses dripping with bright bougainvillea, framed against cerulean skies and say to yourselves, ‘we are on HOLIDAY!’ For the tiny, car-free, carefree island of Panarea is picture postcard perfection. A Picciridda or ‘the little one’ in Sicilian is an enchanting love nest with a blue and white theme: find a bedroom with magnificent sea views from the well-dressed bed and a small but perfectly-formed kitchen with a nice line in tiles and a stunning terrace. It’s here above the rocky cove where you will spend most of your time being captivated by Stromboli puffing away in the distance, stargazing or toasting your good fortune over dinner. Carolina, who is passionate about the island, lives two minutes away and really looks after guests. In August, the island is lively and fun while other months are more relaxed and there’s oodles to do: swimming, boat excursions, mountain walks. Totally dreamy…

We thoroughly enjoyed staying in this beautiful apartment directly overlooking the sea and a view of Stromboli. The owner was very charming and made sure we were comfortable. We would certainly return as the island is interesting and magical.

We had a wonderful stay at the apartment, beautifully and tastefully done out with a gorgeous terrace to sit outside with plenty of space to dine and relax. Great location with a short walk to shops and restaurants and plenty of places to swim off the rocks near the apartment. Carolina was very helpful with lots of tips with where to eat and swim. I highly recommend hiring a small boat to explore around the island, we had great fun and a great way to see Panarea. The island and the apartment is perfect if you want a relaxing break at the end of the busy season.

We stayed for a week in the guest house, which was in fact one end of Carolina's home. We had a huge bedroom, small bathroom & kitchen, terrace, access to a delightful garden and Carolina's roof terrace with views of Stromboli erupting at night. Carolina was a charming and generous hostess who gave us lots of advice about what to do and where to go. We swam locally and hired a small boat to go out to the tiny rocky islands nearby. Altogether highly recommended - very quiet (apart from a few motorcyclists and the occasional manic taxi driver in a golf buggy!) and stunningly beautiful.

My daughter and I spent a week in Carolina's guest rooms at the quiet end of the season. We can highly recommend Carolina, her hospitality and her guest-house. The rooms and kitchen are attractive and authentic and the beds comfortable. The house is a short walk from the port, shops and restaurants and a comfortable one from the sandy beach. We particularly enjoyed the Grand Panoramic Terrace which has a fantastic view of Stromboli’s eruptions, visible at night, and the Milky Way, wonderfully clear in the dark, un-streetlight-lit sky. Carolina is well-known and gives excellent recommendations.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Carolina Abiosi
- The Aeolian Islands are a little corner of paradise and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Panarea often considered to be the most beautiful of these islands.
- Street lamps and cars are banned on Panarea, creating a peaceful atmosphere and clear views of the starry night sky.
- From A Picciridda’s eastward-facing terrace observe active volcano Stromboli, catch the morning sunrise or watch as the island of Dattilo is lit up by the red sunset, a truly breathtaking sight.
- Explore Panarea’s rocky coastline and beautiful beaches or go hiking in the beautiful mountains and immerse yourself in the beautiful Mediterranean vegetation, rich with olives, prickly pears and capers.
- If you want to explore the clear blue sea there is a diving centre on the island not far from A Picciridda.
- Take day trips by hydrofoil to the nearby islands of Stromboli, Salina, Lipari and Vulcano or visit a prehistoric village from the Bronze Age in Panarea’s famous Cala Junco Bay.

We stayed at the apartment for a week and had the most wonderful time. I hadn’t known of Panarea until we found the location on Sawdays and I’m so happy we did. Set in a cluster of volcanic islands above Sicily, we arrived via boat to a magical place. Carolina was a wonderful host; she is an incredible woman and her taste faultless. The rooms are beautifully decorated and surrounded by a lovely terraced garden with views of the sea + Stromboli, it is a total pleasure just to be there. Carolina went out of her way to make us feel at home and gave us useful tips about the island and things to do
