The Experience

The high walls and antique door of this 17th-century fortified farmhouse protect a courtyard where pots, bougainvillea and shutters create a harmonious atmosphere. Inside all is full of colour and family history. The fine big dining room opens onto the orange grove, its table and Moroccan lights for summer suppers, and there’s a fireplace for winter evenings.

The library has a large collection of books in English and Italian and there are interesting pictures and objects which reflect the family’s worldwide travels. Bedrooms are light and spacious, the kitchen has everything you need for cooking but you can also hire a cook.

Join in with harvesting the olives in October, find a quiet spot to sit and read in the gardens, float in the big pool, play tennis, revel in the peace or head for the coast.

Reviews

Picture, picking lemon's from the lemon tree's for an evening G&T or taking part in the olive harvesting late Oct and then sampling Santa Maria's own olive oil. Santa Maria offers wonderful accommodation, a tennis court, lush landscaping and a pool to cool off in. The perfect location for families and friends to come together for an amazing holiday.

I stayed with my friends during the olive harvest in October. The property is enchanting, like something you'd expect to see in a movie. I enjoyed many hours in a deck chair reading a book out by the orange and lemon trees with the brightest of blue skies overhead. If you have an opportunity to stay here for the olive harvest you won't be disappointed - the Sicilians LOVE food so you will be spoilt rotten like I was with huge steaks, typical local fish dishes, plenty of wine and of course lots of fresh olive oil like you have never tasted with fresh crusty out of the oven bread. I feel very lu

A beautiful Villa that is so full of character and history. The tennis court is well situated in the shade of tall trees and the large swimming pool accessed by walking through a beautiful garden. During our holiday it was baking hot, so if sight-seeing was out we were able to relax by the pool. At the rear there is a private lemon grove which is great for a barbecue or just sitting out and eating. Nanette was always available if we needed anything sorted out and could not have been more helpful. I would highly recommend Villa Santa Maria and will keep some very fond memories of our holiday.

Local points of interest from Caroline Manzo

  • Relax by the 12x 6 swimming pool in the shade of ancient olive trees, surrounded by a lush Mediterranean garden. Enjoy a game of tennis on the private tennis court or stroll down the pine avenue to the 16th century watchtower within the grounds.
  • Explore the beautiful coastline you can reach in just 10 minutes.. Go snorkelling in crystal clear waters at Granitola, hire a boat to go swimming around the beautiful coves and bays of the Egadi Islands or relax on one of the long sandy beaches nearby.
  • Mazara, the town and fishing port is ten minutes away by car. Wander through the historic centre with its baroque squares and magnificent Cathedral or through the Kasbah to the fish market. Buy almond pastries from the cloistered nuns of the San Michele .
  • Don’t miss the Museo del Satiro housing the world-famous Dancing Satyr, a stunningly beautiful bronze staue from the 4th century B.C. discovered by local fishermen. Watch the video telling the extraordinary story of its discovery and restoration.
  • Neighboring Marsala, once the Roman Lilybaeum, famous as the landing point for Garibaldi, is the centre of the local wine industry, founded by the Enlish in the 18th century. Local wineries such as Florio and Pellegrino are open for tours and wine tasting.
  • You are only half an hour’s drive from Selinunte, one of the largest archaeological sites of the Ancient Greek world. Visit the temples, enjoy the views over the sea, then catch a golf buggy to the Punic shrine on the outskirts of the site.
