The Experience
Climb up through scrubby oak woodland and the ancient convent appears above you on the ridge – a lovely pile of elegant stone buildings around a central courtyard with views in all directions. Dating from the 12th century, the building was rescued from a dilapidated state by a previous owner with an eye for design.
The apartments wouldn’t look out of place in an interiors magazine. A classy minimalism of stark walls and old brick floors combines with luxurious detail: quality linens on deep mattresses, light muslin at windows, fresh flowers and dark wood antiques. It feels pleasantly exclusive here but in no way pretentious – just relaxingly country-chic.
A large terrace with weathered terracotta pots, a bank of lavender and a sweep of gravel steps leads to the pool area for some basking. Courteous and smiling Antonietta will show you around and if you need a bit of urban action, Umbertide, Perugia and Assisi are not far.

The weekend which I spent at the Convento with a large group of friends was idyllic, helped by perfect weather. The apartments are full of individual character but extremely comfortable and have everything you need. The terrace and grounds are spacious and inviting and the view is stunning. Antonietta is an ideal host and arranged wonderful meals for us by local caterers. There is plenty to see within easy reach but you do need a car.

Location
The neighbourhood
Perched high in the Umbrian hills, it's extremely calm and peaceful at this chic, 12th-century convent. Hire bikes or walk (1.5 hours) straight from the door to an ancient Etruscan tomb (Faggetto) in glorious beech woods, take a tour of the ancient 10th-century Castello di Sorbello (15kms), book cookery courses, go wine tasting, visit an artisan cheese maker, stroke Alpacas at a nearby farm.
Local points of interest from Antonietta .
- Cooking Classes and Wine Tasting available on request
- If you like mysteries and legends about Templars, Perugia will surprise you for its unique beauty: the Church of Sant'Angelo, a paleo-Christian temple evokes legends and events connected to the knights Templar, and it’s only a few km from Antico Convento.
- Relais l’Antico Convento is best accessed through the Perugia International Airport, 30 kms away, with direct flights to many European destinations. Alternatively, the airports of Rome, Florence and Pisa are only a couple of hours drive away.
- Don’t miss the spectacle of nature in Castelluccio di Norcia: Between the end of May and the beginning of July the plains become a triumph of multi-coloured shades thanks to the phenomenon known as "Fioritura" , i.e the flowering.
- Relais l’Antico Convento is an unique place for an independent family or couple’s holiday. It is also ideal for special events suchas weddings, family reunions, birthday parties, hen dos, stag parties, the list is endless.
- Perugina Chocolate Factory:perfect location for exciting experiences both for adults and the little ones. A finger-licking journey that starts from the Historic Museum and ends with a delicious tasting of delicacies.Only a few minutes from the Convento.
