The Experience
At the end of the winding road are three cottages in a fabulous olive grove near the largest man-made lake in Andalusia. Water levels fluctuate and when it’s empty you can spot old buildings. Snug, simple and individual, each cottage has a private entrance and a courtyard; cheek by jowl, they interlink beautifully for larger groups. One is open-plan and flooded with light, another has old low ceilings and an inglenook feel; Perdiz and Liebre (our favourites) sport Moorish sofas. All are charming inside: terracotta tiles, white walls, bright fabrics, spotless bathrooms.
Stock up at traditional village shops from a bygone era and come back to fire up the barbecue or whip up a meal in the well-equipped kitchens. Bask on a lounger by the pool and relish the views, or play pétanque on the sand court. No neighbours detract from the peace.
The nearest village, Fuentes de Cesna, is about 5 minutes by car or a short walk.

We cannot recommend this place highly enough. A little slice of paradise. Gillian and Marylynne were so welcoming (even providing Easter treats for our children). The cottage was brilliantly stocked - so rare to have a tea pot in Spain! The pool was a stunning sun trap. We enjoyed playing boule and the local sites recommended by Gillian and Marylynne particularly an ancient copper age site with incredible views which we managed to explore totally alone. Peaceful and beautiful. The perfect place to escape from it all.

Only 600 characters to describe this fabulous place! I cannot recommend highly enough. We had a wonderful, relaxing stay in Casita Perdiz - spacious, spotless & very comfortable with lots of lovely touches. Gillian & Marylynne such friendly, helpful, thoughtful hosts. You can easily spend the day relaxing by the glorious pool overlooking the olive groves, smells of lavender, jasmine, sweet figs abound, come late afternoon you’ll see swallows, then later bats swooping down for a drink. Pour yourself something cold from the poolside fridge, watch the sunset, then the wait for the stars… Heaven!

This was our third stay with Gillian and Marylynne and was as perfect as the previous two. It’s hard to overstate just how peaceful it is here sitting by the pool reading, dreaming or sipping an ice-cold fino. As before we stayed in Casita Perdiz. Very comfortable beds, great showers and a superbly equipped kitchen (with sharp knives!) which is a joy for those of us who like to travel with our Spanish cookbooks. We were the only guests this time which a shame for others but magical for us. Thank you so much Gillian and Marylynne. We will be back!

Location
The neighbourhood
You can stroll through the olive groves or walk beside the lake - when the water level is low you can spot old olive mills, cortijos and bridges which were once hidden beneath the surface. It's a 15-20 minute drive to Iznájar, known as the magical village. High up on a hill top overlooking the lake it has a castle, churches, little village squares and a rich cultural heritage. Good restaurant too.
Local points of interest from Marylynne Morris & Gillian Purcell
- From March through to August, pink flamingos arrive by their thousands at the nearby lakes of Fuente de Piedra...watch the new fledglings being ringed before they return to Africa in autumn!
- ...alternate a sun-drenched day by the pool with an easy day trip exploring Granada’s Al-Hambra; Cordoba’s Mesquite; Antequera’s Torcal; Ronda’s Bullring or beaches on the Costa del Sol...
- Walk the spectacular "Camino del Rey" suspended above El Chorro Gorge (booking necessary)... Spring birdlife all about you.
- Feast at our nearby restaurant “Casa Piolas” featured in Jon Clarke’s “Dining Secrets of Andalucia”:..”you wonder not when, but how many Michelin stars the place deserves”......
- Explore our local senderos (walks) especially the “mesa” where recent archaeological excavations by the University of Granada have found “possibly the best preserved chalcolithic wall elevations in Europe”.
- April means exploring our arroyo for wild orchids; flinging your windows open and listening to the nightingales - or hold out until May for punnets of fat, juicy cherries from our neighbours Piedad and Paco.

Introducing
Marylynne Morris & Gillian Purcell
Sisters Marylynne and Gillian, delightful, helpful, generous, bought the old farmhouse after falling in love with the vastness and ruggedness of southern Spanish landscapes - it reminded them of their childhood in South Africa. They are devoted to the place, their guests and their animals.
We very much enjoyed the delightful ambiance of the well appointed Casita Las Rosas. Gillian and Marylynne are such delightful and engaging hosts who provided excellent directions, a much appreciated welcome package and varied suggestions for exploring the local area. The casita was an excellent home base for day trips into Cordoba (pre booked), Granada (pre booked), and exploring nearby towns (Priego de Cordoba) and local sites, including a nearby Roman villa, fortress and olive oil farm and tasting venue. Our stay was absolutely wonderful and well worth a return trip!
