The Experience

At the end of the winding road are three cottages in a fabulous olive grove near the largest man-made lake in Andalusia. Water levels fluctuate and when it’s empty you can spot old buildings. Snug, simple and individual, each cottage has a private entrance and a courtyard; cheek by jowl, they interlink beautifully for larger groups. One is open-plan and flooded with light, another has old low ceilings and an inglenook feel; Perdiz and Liebre (our favourites) sport Moorish sofas. All are charming inside: terracotta tiles, white walls, bright fabrics, spotless bathrooms.

Stock up at traditional village shops from a bygone era and come back to fire up the barbecue or whip up a meal in the well-equipped kitchens. Bask on a lounger by the pool and relish the views, or play pétanque on the sand court. No neighbours detract from the peace.

The nearest village, Fuentes de Cesna, is about 5 minutes by car or a short walk.

What a lovely discovery, completely hidden in olive groves! I was intrigued by the property with its 3 interlinked very cosy cottages, each with its own courtyard decorated with some farm equipment from the old days and I loved chatting with the owners about anything and everything under the watchful eye of a stunning cross-eyed cat. This is nothing more than pure bliss.

What a fantastic place to stay with exceptionally welcoming hosts and sisters, Gillian and Marylynne. From the pre travel and arrival instructions, to listed attractions and directions in the accommodation book we couldn’t have asked for more. Peace and tranquillity after a long day visiting all the attractions in the area, from Cordoba, Grenda and Malaga all within 1.5 hours away. Refreshing and clean pool, accommodation was spotless. Highly recommend and glad we were able to stay.

We really relaxed at the beautiful rural Cortija las Rosas. It is surrounded by nature - lovely views of olive trees on the hillsides and amazing bird life - we saw bee eaters and heard nightingales, cuckoos and a hoopoe. The cottage was very comfortable - beautifully decorated, with everything you could need. Gillian and Marylynn the owners are very kind and welcoming , offering lots of useful suggestions. We recommend opting for the welcome pack and following the directions closely. Lots to do locally - Iznajar is a pretty town, archaeological remains we had to ourselves - and further afield

Our stay at Cortijo Las Rosas was utterly magical. Our casita was equipped with everything we could possibly have needed, elegantly furnished and comfortable, with a huge scented jasmine bush in the sunny courtyard. The pool was wonderful, much enjoyed by the whole family, with breathtaking views. We loved waking to the sound of birdsong, wandering in the stunning natural surroundings, and playing board games by the fire once the sun set. Gillian and Marylynne were so welcoming, attentive but never intrusive, providing excellent tips for places to visit nearby. We can't wait to return!

Location

The neighbourhood

You can stroll through the olive groves or walk beside the lake - when the water level is low you can spot old olive mills, cortijos and bridges which were once hidden beneath the surface. It's a 15-20 minute drive to Iznájar, known as the magical village. High up on a hill top overlooking the lake it has a castle, churches, little village squares and a rich cultural heritage. Good restaurant too.

  • Walk the spectacular "Camino del Rey" suspended above El Chorro Gorge (booking necessary)... Spring birdlife all about you.
  • Feast at our nearby restaurant “Casa Piolas” featured in Jon Clarke’s “Dining Secrets of Andalucia”:..”you wonder not when, but how many Michelin stars the place deserves”......
  • Explore our local senderos (walks) especially the “mesa” where recent archaeological excavations by the University of Granada have found “possibly the best preserved chalcolithic wall elevations in Europe”.
  • April means exploring our arroyo for wild orchids; flinging your windows open and listening to the nightingales - or hold out until May for punnets of fat, juicy cherries from our neighbours Piedad and Paco.
